On this day in 1856: Sir Hugh Munro was born. He was the first person to create a list of all Scottish summits over 3,000ft (in 1891). These mountains are now known as Munros and there are 282 of them. I took this picture climbing the wonderful Buachaille Etive MΓ²r in Glen Coe.

On this day 60 years ago: Cruachan hydroelectric Power Station opened. Ben Cruachan in Argyll (pictured) may look like another picturesque Scottish munro, but deep within the hollow mountain, it actually houses the world's first ever reversible pumped storage hydro system.

Happy 70th birthday to broadcaster and writer Sally Magnusson who was born in Bellshill in 1955. After living through her mother's decline and death from dementia, she started the charity Playlist for Life in 2013, and has campaigned for more awareness about this awful disease.
