On this day in 1274: Robert The Bruce was born in Turnberry Castle. In 1306 he was crowned King of Scots at Scone. After the death of William Wallace, he led the campaign to regain Scottish independence, culminating in his victory at the Battle of Bannockburn in June 1314.

Much-loved childrens TV presenter Glen Michael has died at the age of 99. Who remembers watching him every Sunday on STV? With his wee dug and his talking lamp Paladin. His ‘Cartoon Cavalcade’ was a godsend for kids when we had a tiny amount of TV channels.

Happy birthday to actor Richard Wilson who was born on this day in 1936 in Greenock. His most famous role was grumpy Victor Meldrew in sitcom One Foot in the Grave. 'I just wave if they use "the catchphrase". I expect to get it - it was a milestone in my career'.

On This Day in 1946: the late AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott was born in Forfar. He spent the first 6 years of his life in Kirriemuir, before his family moved to Australia. This brilliant statue, by John McKenna, was unveiled in his home town in 2016.

Happy 60th birthday to actor Tommy Flanagan who was born in Glasgow. He appeared in Braveheart and Gladiator, but is probably best-known for his role in 7 seasons of Sons of Anarchy. He turned to acting after being scarred for life at the age of 25 in a knife attack.

On this day 80 years ago: Ken Buchanan was born in Edinburgh. He became undisputed World Lightweight Champion in 1971. A statue of him was unveiled in his home city in 2022. He died the following year. Buchanan is widely-considered to be Scotland's greatest ever boxer.
