Today, Battleship New Jersey survived what may be her first earthquake while on land! The Japanese battlecruiser Amagi, approximately the same size as New Jersey, was wrecked by an earthquake in 1923 but the Black Dragon weathered hers unharmed.
Dry dock tours are available for a limited time this spring starting this weekend April 6 and 7! Not only will you see the underside of the ship, but you’ll learn about our ongoing restoration efforts that are vital to the Battleship’s longevity.

Battleship New Jersey arrived at Paulsboro Marine Terminal on Thursday for ballast. 2,000 tons of water will be pumped into tanks in the ship so she can sit evenly on the blocks in dry dock at the Philadelphia Naval Yard later this week!

Our shiny new aluminum anodes have arrived! All 1,204 zinc anodes have been removed from the ship, and we’ll be replacing these with aluminum anodes, which are more appropriate for where the ship is moored on the Delaware River.

The folks from Sherwin Williams Protective & Marine Coatings visited us in dry dock today to check out their system of coatings in action! The crew here started painting the port side last week, and they even got a glimpse of the boot topping toward the bow.

The view from the caisson offers an awesome side-by-side view of the work being done as the hull gets pressure washed. You can see flash rust has formed, but it will be removed prior to her paint job!

While Battleship New Jersey is in dry dock, our deck team is continuing to replace teak by hand on our main deck. We hope to complete this 43,000 square foot project as other work is done at the yard!

The key to keeping a dry dock dry is the caisson shown here in our latest Dry Dockuseries video! Once we entered dry dock and confirmed we were lined up on the blocks, the caisson was brought back and we could drain the dock.

There are 160 through-hull openings in the ship, which are intentional openings used in active service for cooling the engines.

While in dry dock, we’re testing the thickness of the hull! By taking ultrasonic shots, we’ll be able to see if any parts of the hull have wasted away over time and where repairs may be needed.

This is a telephone, affectionally called Halsey's Phone. It was removed from the ship during her early 1980s refit and was mostly likely from the old admiral's stateroom that was turned into the Combat Engagement Center during that time. Donated by Susan L. Farmer
We are saddened by the loss of Lou Conter, the last living survivor of the USS Arizona battleship that exploded and sank during the attack on Pearl Harbor. His bravery will forever be remembered. Fair Winds & Following Seas to Lou and all his shipmates.
