Last week, a landmark SC judgement restoring Assam man Rahim Ali's citizenship 12 yrs after he was declared a foreigner had made waves
I went looking for him only to find he had died 2.5 yrs before the verdict, carrying the heavy tag of foreigner & illegal immigrant to his grave
At least 60 particles in a 17-year-old's shoulder, another teenager likely to lose vision in an eye. With the valley now boiling, Qs in Manipur over excess use of force by security forces in cracking down on protests, particularly against young students
Everytime I speak to Faizan's mother, I cry with her. Sending him to IIT was her dream. When he was found dead on campus, she cried foul but it was shrugged off as suicide. Then his body was exhumed and now, 2.5 years later it has been found that he had been shot and stabbed
Gauhati Press Club statement on Assam CM lashing out at a Muslim reporter - who was asking him questions - over his identity:
The Gauhati Press Club has noted with concern increasing instances of disparaging responses by political leaders when journalists ask them questions (1/3)
As a young person living without family in Delhi, this entire period has been endless hustling - to get by on a daily basis, and now to even have a place to stay - all the while worrying about keeping the job and ofc not falling sick. I'm just tired. And this is while reporting..
Republic reporter screaming and scolding a student at Gargi College student saying "where were you four days ago??!!" And when the student asks, "Where were YOU four days ago?" she asks how dare she question the media. Amazing.
What makes the incident captured in video even more shocking is that the victims have stated in their police complaint that they were with police and were forcibly taken away from police custody by the mob
Professional and personal update: I have shifted base to Assam and have joined the small

team covering the North East. Equal parts thrilled and daunted by this exciting new assignment. I'm open and looking out for all leads, suggestions and conversations!
The strangest thing is that the ppl of Assam literally voted for the CAB by sending 9 BJP MPs to LS. It was well known that CAB was a central part of its agenda. There were protests against CAB even before elections. But still gave a mandate for CAB through their votes.
Sanu gave his 12 std physics paper y'day. His house was burnt last week - with it went his books, notes, uniform. He studied from an app. He reached the exam centre early and changed into his friend's spare uniform in a nearby park. He wants to be doctor.
Weekend curfew, night curfew, limited public transport for commuting - the entire onus of halting COVID spread is on the working public while elected leaders of every party feel no need to act as roles models

“The police were there with the mob which was attacking our village. The police picked us up from near home, and took us a little away from the village and left us on the road with the mob. We were given to them by police”:
Words of one of the victims
St Stephen's is now a different college from the one I had graduated from less than four years ago. Couldn't have imagined a large body of students taking a strong stand, boycotting classes and protesting openly inside campus. And as far I know, theead was taken by women here too
I would urge you to look beyond the headline - I had gone to just write Sana's profile but realised her story is also her mother and sisters'. The five sisters from Old Delhi are firstgen school completers - the force behind that, their mother.
Won a very special and meaningful award today. Received a Children's Champion award in Journalism from Justice P S Narasimha for my stories centreing children's lives, rights and issues while reporting from Delhi.
Richa Chaddha's terrible ugly reaction to critique today has made me very sad, I don't know why. We UC people seem to completely lose our awareness when it comes to ourselves. We "mean well" and are OUTRAGED when we're told that something we said or wrote wasn't okay...
Always surprised how education isn't considered a 'sexy' or weighty enough reporting beat. How do you talk and write about anything in this country without talking about education?
In TISS Guwahati over half the faculty and the entire non-teaching staff has been dismissed. 4 out of 7 teachers from my alma mater, TISS Mumbai's School of Media and Cultural Studies have been dismissed. Without notice.

Almost every definitive persisting image of the turmoil of the past few years in this region had one man behind them: Danish Siddiqui. His photos said far far more than the stories they accompanied. This is unbelievable and horrifying.
Trolls shared photos of a battered Rihanna and celebrated that she was a victim of assault. And today, publications describe that hideous response as 'entertaining'.
“What is the point now? The fear that he lived under for 10 years, of being taken away, died with him. If they still wanted to call him a foreigner, what would they have done? Picked him up from his grave?” asked his wife Hajera Bibi.
A cruel twist. Read:
Update for now: TISS has withdrawn the termination letters. Say Tata Educational Trust has "provided assurance" that it will release the funds. Requests staff to continue working and that their salaries will be released once the funds are received.

🚨 A special series: When Delhi schools reopened fully after 2 years on April 1, we spent 5 weeks with class 5 A in a govt school attending every math class and PTM to track how their teacher is trying to bridge the gap.
Part 1 today lays out the problem.
I urgently need a COVID home test. I have tried Dangs, Lal Path, Path Kind, Dr. Das Path Lab. Apollo has said 72 hours for result and I don't know if I have to settle for that. Home test only. Please let me know if you know of any reliable places can contact.
I spent 7y/o Zaid's first day back at school with him and witnessed an adorable exchange leading to him finding his near-forgotten friend. Story spotlight on how imp play is for little kids like him and what they, esp from working class families, have missed out on for so long

Back from a difficult week of reporting on the harrowing events in Manipur.
A thread of stories
@jimmyleivon
and I did together:
1. Capturing the devastation and displacement in capital Imphal after 2 days of violence on the streets
Happy to be among this year's

recipients for my reportage for

on the immediate aftermath of Assam's massive crackdown against child marriage last year, in which over 2700 people had been arrested in a week.
Nine days into battling a horrible horrible set of symptoms, I finally have a test report telling me that I have COVID 🙄 Anyway, have been getting treated as a covid patient since day 1 and fighting on.
Hansraj, one of DU's top colleges, is now home to a cow in a 'cow protection and research centre'. Principal says it will provide ghee etc for monthly havan on campus, gobar for a gas plant, milk and curd for hostel students + research of course
My grandmother, like many geandmothers is a superlative cook. She has a published cookbook of native Assamese recipes and I was considering translating those recipes to English because I haven't really seen a solid collection of assamese recipes for non-assamese people. Is that
In this week's StreetWise, Delhi's Pandara Road gets its name from a typo which never got corrected. How the Pandavas were pushed out off the street map of the new capital.
@IndianExpress
5. A small story on how 4 out of 8 local dialects - Thadou, Paite, Hmar and Poumai - in which news programmes are normally aired have disappeared from AIR Imphal. The reason: the presenters all had to go off to relief camps
Bimol Akoijam's fiery maiden address in the Lok Sabha after being elected Inner Manipur MP.

Looking to speak to many DU students, preferably those not living in Delhi right now, about the continuing online teaching-learning there. Please DM me, it's for a story.
When they are so ghoulish about a conflict in another land, imagine what they direct at their perceived enemies in their own land everyday. Not an ounce of what makes a human 'human.'
3 govt guest teachers shared a flat in Delhi. Unpaid for 2 months, they're back to their villages in 3 different states - one working at a PPE manufacturing unit, two farming. These 3 friends are a microcosm of the economic distress of guest teachers now
After seeing the 99% cutoff for Pol. Sc. at Kirori Mal College, I can see kids with 99.25% worried about getting into colleges of their choice. It's like something out of an absurdist tragicomedy. The assessment and admission system is a flaming dumpster.
The North East has been battered by Cyclone Remal. Multiple landslides across Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, Meghalaya. At least 16 dead, many more injured. Road connectivity disrupted, power supply in Lower Assam, including Guwahati, completely disrupted. (No deaths below incident)
Is there any way to measure oxygen levels at home apart from an oximeter? My sister has deformed hands because of cerebral palsy, we're not being able to get a reading on the oximeter.
On Tuesday, representatives of Marwari groups in Assam's Sivasagar knelt in the presence of a state minister to 'apologize' after the assault of a 17 yr old local girl erupted into massive row against 'outsiders' and specifically 'non Assamese' business owners in the town (1/4)
Will never get over the time I sweetly told my boyfriend that unlike most couples, we're one in which the guy is hotter than the woman. He said in dead seriousness "I'm not hot either"
Nobody needs any knowledge of history, politics, IR, colonialism, imperialism, any ism to recognize the horror of this moment. I can't believe what we're witnessing, I can't believe the moral bankruptcy of the enablers and cheerleaders.
Why the case against her by publishing giants in the Delhi High Court is the first in which Sci-Hub creator Elbakyan is defending herself, how widespread the site's use is in India, by whom and to download what. Put this together with a lot of help from a lot of people.
Do UC people think that looking at the Hathras incident as caste violence implies that it's not gendered violence or downplays its gendered nature? Just 2 years back we had an uproar about the term "brahminical patriarchy". Clearly many have refused to educate themselves.
Last week
@IndianExpress
launched a series on the learning challenges schools must confront with the return of children after 2 years of closure, through 5 weeks with a class of 5th graders. Here are all the stories in 1 thread:
Part 1 laid out the problem
Ending this nightmare year with the nightmare of looking for a decent place to live within my budget in Dlehi. Don't want to post specific requirements here because of creeps. If you or someone you know is looking for a flatmate, could you please DM me? Happy to discuss there.
The Assam Police had issued legal notices to 16 opposition political leaders in the state directing them to withdraw their call for a statewide hartal in protest against the notification of the CAA rules, threatening legal action against them if they don't do so

When she passed class XII in 2018, Nodeep Kaur had to put her Delhi University dreams on hold to work to support her family. She explained to me why, 3 years later, she's no longer interested in her higher education.
Extremely interesting numbers playing out across the region. The NDA is currently trailing in both seats in Manipur. If this trend persists, the outcome will be read as a clear referendum against the handling of the ongoing crisis on the state.
Spent one last day at Singhu yesterday... surreal to see it all being packed away. Protesters from Badwala village are taking back the bamboo their hut was made of. They'll rebuild it in their village as a monument of their participation in a historic mvmt
I feel like this is a learning moment for a lot of us who write on or try to work around "social justice". It also reinforces my suspicion of journalists, actors, personalities who ride on images of "being aware and on the right side" with half-baked knowledge and engagement
Women waiting, protesting with kids in tow is a scene playing out in police stations across Assam after 2200+ have been arrested in 2 days in child marriage crackdown. Political criticism growing, CM says 'a gen will have to suffer to save lakhs of girls'
Incredible. I love this South Asia dominance in an athletic event! Not something we could have even imagined a few years back. Neeraj has our heart always and Arshad Nadeem is just incredible.
We tried to find out who Aishwarya Reddy - the girl who said she couldn't live if she couldn't study - was, about her life in a premier college - a world of glittering possibilities, and what returning home because of the lockdown meant for her

DU boasts of more girls than boys today. It all started in a haveli near Jama Masjid where IP college was born. Chaperones and tonga carts went from home to home picking up the girls to placate their conservative families.
A new Delhi city weekly feature:
My jethai aita - my maternal grandfather's elder sister - Tultul Barua passed away yesterday. I've always been in awe of the way she lived her life completely on her own terms - eloped in the 50s, separated in the 70s, became Assam's first woman journalist. Bold and outspoken.
It's been a year since children below ckass 9 in Delhi have been to school. I spent some time with a few of them to understand what their year of learning away from school has been like.

The entirety of the 1st Manipur Legislative Assembly session since violence began lasted all of 11 minutes, with no Kuki MLAs. Within those 11 minutes, the moon found a place but not the violence and divide in the state.
Ppl tweeting that JNU should be shut down for asking for better while others pay 5 lakhs as tuition fees for a BTech in a pvt college. Convinced that not only do ppl in this country not want better for the marginalised, they also don't want it for themselves and their children
People have been terribly terribly kind. This clearly reflects the experience of a lot of people and knowing that there are so many willing to stick out a hand to help is a little calming. Thank you everyone who reached out 🌸
What is the point of reading many books when I have the retention capacity of a flea (?) and only have impressionistic recollections of books I read two years back?
Here's my favourite story about how my grandfather landed up in Calcutta with a skeleton in his suitcase as a 14-year-old in the early 1940s: My paternal grandfather, my koka, Dr. Banshidhar Baruah was to go on to become one of the most distinguished pathologists of his time (1)
