6 months ago my cofounder and I quit our day jobs at P&G. We wanted to spend more time doing what we love, building DTC brands. This week we launched out first new brand, Pearly, for under $10k. Here's a thread on the journey so far 👇🏼
I do all the CS for 2 ecom brands myself in ~15 mins a day.
If you're sub $1mil a year as an ecom brand, there's no reason to be outsourcing CS tickets.
Here's the guide outsourcing gurus don't want you to see 👇
Thanks for reading this far 🙏🏼 I hope you enjoyed it! Here's a 15% off code to our store: TWITTER. If you've never had bubble tea before, we have a sampler kit for you. . Back to building 🔨
Are there any good overseas shopify dev shops out there?
Every team I speak to has relatively high hourly rates (for their region) but also way overquotes hours. Ends up costing the same as a domestic dev who's honest with hours 🤷🏼♂️
@thesamparr
Less venture backed founders who are promoting their product and providing little to no interesting stories/ideas. Skipping most of those.
Less back to back hubspot ads 😉
More of everything else - pod is on point.
Claude vs. Shopify Apps🧑💻Part 2 of this series
Shopify Quiz Apps start at $400 a month. Claude built a free one in <5 minutes.
If this blows up I'll implement it on
@societysocks
and run $1k of x ads at it.
Shopify's themes have come a LONG way
The value of custom builds continues to going down every day. Stitching 90% complete themes + 10% dev + replo = success
Looking to hire a freelance designer for the next ~1 month for some misc projects.
If anyone has a good designer (comfortable with ecom web design) who is available for a contract would appreciate it!
Can be anywhere globally
Trying out
@hiwonderment
. Support/onboarding/sales team have all been amazing so far.
Not endorsed - just feel like apps with good support deserve recognition in the shopify SaaS space.
I find these types of threads on twitter dangerous and misleading for new folks. Ecommerce/info products are not this simple and you’ll blow a lot more money/time before you *maybe* find a winning product. Fb ads is harder than it’s ever been.
I don't care who you are.
Almost anyone can learn how to run Facebook Ads and make money.
Have an info-product business or E-Commerce brand?
Read this thread, and you'll have the basic skills needed to launch your first campaign.
No B.S. Let's go.
///THREAD///
Choose what flavors to launch, order samples from suppliers, design logo/packaging, build landing page/website, source upsell item, find a 3pl, build a tiktok, get some early influencers on board and a few other boring things
I got tired of having a million website ideas and not being able to build them so I learned how to code. Here's my first side-project built with python/django. Inspired by
@ShaanVP
@myfirstmilpod
@jakobgreenfeld
Last time I launched a brand (6 years ago), there were only ~200k
@Shopify
merchants. Today there's 1.75 million 🤯 We started finding that a lot of our good ideas were already being built. But that's ok.
About to do something crazy.
Over the next 20 days we'll be doing a new growth hack/tactic every day to grow
@DrinkPearly
.
I'll be sharing them all in this 🧵. At the end I'll share the results (which day was best, metrics, etc.)
For everyone seeing
@thesamparr
's tweets about Hampton all over their TL wishing they had something like this for their industry/size check out:
- (DTC)
- (indie biz founders)
-
@andruyeung
's events/community
SaaS people, this is a nice and clean pricing page (
@attio
)
No need for fancy UI or illustrations - just tell me how much it costs in the simplest terms
When I scroll, show my the nitty gritty for the weird use case combination I'm solving for
Gotta give a shoutout to the
@juniphq
support team. Always quick to respond and get it solved.
Top two CS teams I've seen are probably them
@hiwonderment
No affiliation to either. More people should shoutout software with good support
You shouldn't be afraid of someone taking your idea you haven't started.
I've been pinging app devs for 6 months asking them to build a proper build your own bundle app in shopify and no one has started/shown interest.
Hiring a video creator for to manage tiktok/youtube.
Full-time, remote (Canada/USA), lots of flexibility to be creative, tons of free bubble tea.
Official posting here: . DM with questions.
Though I was progressing well with both endeavors, I hit a point where I realized I needed to let one go if I wanted the other to prosper (
@ShaanVP
and the MFM pod played a role in this thinking). P&G was the clear "safe" path. Conversely, focusing on DTC was a big ❓
Every time I see big executions like this my former CPG-self hurts a little inside.
While aesthetically amazing, the cost of running these endcaps (custom shelving + space cost) is bonkers, and there was almost never ROI.
it's live!!
Please tell me if anything is broken - I can't afford the fancy device testing software.
Also left a little easter egg on the site for the nerds out there.
Business idea: car maintenance consultant. They tell you exactly what’s wrong with your car and how much you should pay to fix it. No repairs or referrals on site by default.
Hosted a DTC dinner with a group of 10 founders yesterday in Toronto. Always feel energized talking to folks in the space.
I'll probably host one every 2 months. If that sounds interesting to you shoot me a dm.
Tired of repeating yourself in chat GPT prompts?
Made a DTC x GPT-3 gsheets template where you can store your brand info and simplify prompts for email generation (subject lines, content calendar, copy, etc.)
Dropping it on Tuesday in my Newsletter
Hosting a DTC/CPG founders dinner in downtown Toronto on Apr 20th.
DM me if you'd like to attend (or if you'd like to be added to the list for future ones).
It really only took us 3-4 weeks to finish most of the tasks I mentioned, but ~1.5 months for our final product to ship from our manufacturer due to endless complications with freight-forwarders, customs agents, fedex and more. Hopefully just a growing pain.
Leant some money to a small convenience store in the middle east two months ago through
@Kiva
and they already repaid the full amount. It's amazing to see how quickly they were able to put the capital to work and repay their loan.
Because
@Shopify
hasn't provided clear guidance on how to do this. 90% of merchants have no idea the deadline is 60 days away let alone what to do about it.
A simple how-to video would have sufficed, but instead we got a confusing email
🗓️ We are now 60 days away from Shopify’s checkout.liquid deprecation.
Would love to hear what is holding back agencies and merchants from upgrading to checkout extensibility at this point. All ears.
The new Klaviyo AB testing feature in flows is a game-changer. Next time you set up flows, split test 5 subject lines (and/or designs), and set it to choose the winner when it's statistically significant. That's it. Optimization on autopilot.
Quitting my job was weird in a bunch of ways I didn't expect. The best way to put it is that strange feeling of calm right after a storm passes, when you're not sure if it's safe to go outside.
Thinking of starting an occasional marketing/ecom newsletter with stuff I'm learning and hearing from other founders, cool brands to take inspo from, tactics that work, etc.
Will probably bribe people with socks to subscribe.
Another great DTC meetup in the books.
Thank you
@UserLoopHQ
for sponsoring, and
@WakeWaterCA
for hosting at their HQ.
If you need a Shopify post-purchase survey app, try UserLoop. Reasonably priced and feature packed 👍
90% of freelancers I work with have some sort of freak life event within 1 month of me working with them.
Either I'm cursed, or a lot of them use crazy excuses to get out of delivering work on time 🤣
@moizali
They probably make more money on the business guests who pay the premium vs a volume play. I would guess if you can afford to stay in a hotel long term you can afford the laundry bill. I think there’s also concerns with providing a quality experience at volume.
Planning the last Toronto DTC meetup of the year
✅ Meet Toronto DTC Founders & Operators
✅ No agencies/SaaS salespeople
New founders always welcome, comment or DM if you'd like to join our upcoming meetup (or a future one in 2024). Nov/Dec date TBD.
1️⃣ Context:
I worked at P&G for 4 years managing 8/9 figure accounts - learned a ton and met a lot of awesome people. While working there I was running
@societysocks
on the side. This was my first DTC at-bat.
A day in ecom:
Breakfast at a cafe - met an ecom owner struggling to grow
By lunch, we'd rebuilt his funnel out of a dumpling shop
By 8 PM, his store saw a 30% rev spike
Went to a DTC dinner to brag about our cost caps
Life is good.
Shoutout to
@adhithya_vijai
and
@PrakharS96
for building a bundle solution into
@foxsellapp
within ~2 weeks and jumping on a call to demo it for me.
Will have a new bundle feature up in the next week or so 😱
I'm not affiliated. If you need bundles, hit them up!
Marketing twitter has so much going on that we'll sometimes convince ourselves we need to be doing all these new things popping up on our timelines.
It's important to take a step back and decide what your big 2-3 bets are. Focus on those and cut the rest.
A story of ecommerce:
- customer places order with wrong address, order fails to deliver
- customer updates address, order fails to deliver again (wrong address twice)
- customer comments on our fb complaining????
5️⃣ What now?
The validation phase begins! Before we launched we had a lot of growth ideas (paid and organic) which we plan test out now. We're hoping to validate Pearly, and gather as much consumer feedback as possible to understand where to go next.
Why are there still no shopify apps that do this well?
Last time I tried to DIY build it/get a dev, I was quoted 10k lol
There are some build-your-own bundle apps but the UI is 😓
Excited to announce the public launch of my newest startup today, Web3PL. We deliver ecommerce orders for brands in the metaverse, freeing up their time to focus on their next NFT project.
If you're a small brand, instead of introducing 10 klaviyo flows, go ALL IN on the first welcome and abandon checkout email.
If you're hiring an agency, throw all the budget into those two. You can thank me later
Are DTC subscriptions dead? Do customers still buy subscriptions?
Just a few questions I've heard in the last few months in DTC circles.
Recharge just dropped their annual subscription report which gives some context.
1 minute TLDR 👇
🚨BREAKING KLAVIYO NEWS🚨
Klaviyo now allows you to insert a Video block.
Only available on bigger accounts right now. Going to be playing with it today and will report back 📽️
We're still hiring a social media manager for
@DrinkPearly
. If you know anyone who wants to get paid to make fun tiktoks/youtube videos DM me. No experience required.
