4) On the 8th November 2006 – 89 years after his execution – he was pardoned along with 306 other soldiers executed for desertion and other offenses. 🇯🇲🇬🇧🇧🇪.

3) He was executed on 20 September 1917 by the British Army after being accused and tried for desertion. He was 17 years old. Morris is buried in Poperinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium where he lies with 680 others, 16 of whom were also ‘shot at dawn’.

2) Morris was a part of the fifth contingent of West Indian recruits into the British West Indian Regiment. He left Jamaica on March 30th 1917 on the HMT Briton, escorted by a British warship, and served in the Ypres Salient in Belgium.

1) Private Herbert Morris was born in 1900 in the parish of St.Catherine below the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, thirty miles from the capital Kingston. He was the son of William and Ophelia Morris of Riversdale.

4) His brother survived the conflict, going on to become a noted lawyer and Jamaica’s first and only Premier who led the country to independence. Manley is buried in Poperinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium. 🇯🇲🇬🇧🇧🇪.

3) With his brother Norman, he volunteered for the British Army in 1915, joining the Royal Field Artillery. He sadly died on 26 July 1917 on the Western Front.

2) Gunner Douglas Roy Manley was born in Jamaica in 1895. He was born to businessman Thomas Albert Samuel and Margaret Manley (née Shearer). Manley studied in England before the war, attending West Cornwall College and Felstead Public School.

2 / These brave soldiers served in some of the most hard-fought battles on the western front in Europe, the Middle East and in Africa. Hundreds of soldiers from the British West Indies Regiment are buried across western Europe, including France and Belgium.

1 / Did you know that 15,600 men from across the Caribbean took up the call to fight in the Great War?. The vast majority of volunteers were enlisted into various battalions of the British West Indies Regiment, a unit of the British Army.
