Concluding a number of weeks of experiments today in Advanced Chemistry Club we attempted to sacrifice Christmas puddings with our homemade alcohol. The Y12's fruit alcohol was too wet but y13's veg alcohol (from potato, carrot & beetroot) was successfully lit #boltonchem

Advanced chemistry club are making their own alcohol with Y12 fermenting fruits and Y13 fermenting vegetables so we can analyse our mixtures using our well practised method later in the term. Flasks were bubbling away nicely as KLT left #boltonchem

Two of the allotropes of carbon studied at GCSE have links to Greater Manchester. Graphene discovered at the University of Manchester 20 years ago & Buckminster fullerene discovered 39 years ago with @BoltonSchAlumni the late Sir Harry Kroto part of the Nobel prize winning team.
#OnThisDay in 2004, Professors Sir Andre Geim & Sir Kostya Novoselov at @OfficialUoM isolated graphene with a piece of tape! This breakthrough earned them the Nobel Prize & revolutionised material science. 20 years later, graphene is still reshaping industries. #HomeofGraphene

Advanced chemistry club was back in full swing at lunchtime with Y13 boys showing our new Y12 members the first beer analysis experiment. It was a steep learning curve using new Quickfit equipment for the Y12s. #boltonchem #boltoninspire

Great to see so many 6th formers turn up to find out about Advanced Chem Club today. Y12s should sign up on SOCS and I'll get experiments ordered for next week. Y13s will be able to use their leadership skills to get everyone started on beer analysis.

Advanced Chemistry Club is back tomorrow for 6th form, new Y12s are very welcome. We have some experiments planned to see if we can get reproducible results for our beer analysis & planning for a trip to the brewery to see the chemistry & chemical engineering in action.

The new school year is on the horizon so now is a good time to start making some gentle steps towards ensuring a strong start to next steps in chemistry. Those starting chemistry A-level will find going over some mole calculations and structure and bonding very helpful.

One for the boys who are fans of the super heavy elements from our work in Y8!.
As @ChemistryKit writes, 'New elements are no longer discovered.' Instead, they are created, and scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are hot on the trail of element 120.
