It's inconvenient, but that's not a reason to accept it. If we're serious about sustainable business, about a livable future, then the number of harmful things we need to stop is uncountable. It's not just big-box retailers of course. We could get lost in the magnitude.

I realize that many of us benefit from the employment, tax revenue, earnings in our investment portfolios, convenient access to cheap lawn furniture, and more. But their business models, products, and operations perpetuate harm.

At a time when insects are in dangerous decline, there is a whole retail section dedicated to “insect killers”. In #SingleUsePackaging no less. These companies' reports full of ambitious #sustainability goals are no help when it comes to serving life.

A stroll through @CanadianTire @thehomedepot or any of their #bigbox #reno peers showcases a staggering number of broken tools that makes things worse. Insecticides. #ESG untethered from reality. That kind of thing.

We have to do the work, to relearn, reunderstand, and rebuild the knowledge within us. Otherwise we won’t heal. It’s that simple.

And it takes real, sometimes surprising work. For me, it took a broken wrist with complications to learn the difference between thinking and believing, and why that matters for healing, on a personal and industrial level.

Thinking is different from believing. It’s different from joining movements, donning badges, or wearing identities.

You have the solution. We all do. It comes down to what we think.

Industry does not need more ESG and sustainability reporting. It needs a reality check, in service of life. The Google Matereality case study breaks it down, backs it up, and invites you to apply a matereality lens in your work. https://t.co/uVgdh00Ir7

What if the company incentivized people to use their inner wisdom, to learn from people of younger and older generations?

What if the algorithms were designed by people with a pluriverse of worldviews?

It’s more than greenwashing. It's profiting from the acceleration towards societal and ecosystem collapse. There are better alternatives. What if Google only earned revenue by cultivating wellness?

Now they are far, far away from their commons-oriented transparency commitment. Instead, their business model generates revenue by selling advertising using AI and personal data to fuel consumerism and profit.

Fast forward to the present and we see an exponential trajectory in advertising revenue growth. From a little over 3 billion USD when they publicly listed in 2004 to nearly 300 billion USD 20 years later.

At that time, they were committed to transparency, to staying within the academic realm. They were openly concerned about the business model of advertising.
