The cluster of bunkers between the 3rd and 8th fairways serves a dual purpose. Beautifully shaped, they look untouched since Tom Simpson placed them there over a century ago — and they’re just as effective today, sitting exactly where bailout shots tend to finish on both holes.

Recent research suggests the 15th green may pre-date Tom Simpson’s work on the course — originally part of a long bogey five played from today’s 9th tee across the sloping land. It now sets up a do-or-die approach into one of the most severely contoured greens on the course.

One reason our clubhouse atmosphere is so renowned? Its location on the course. Overlooking the 1st and 18th greens, and sitting right between the 9th and 10th, there’s always a buzz — before, during, and after the round. See it for yourself this summer:

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th greens often shape the rhythm of a match. The 3rd caps off a tough opening stretch, while the 4th is a scoreable opportunity, and the 5th can yield birdies as well as disaster. Each offers a chance to claw back ground or press home an early lead.

Bunker restoration and playing corridor widening in recent years have helped to bring our Simpson and Fowler course back to its best. A huge thanks to our brilliant team of greenkeepers, who’ve carried out all the work in-house — and to @cdpgolf1 for their guidance throughout.

Tom Simpson was a true artist — not just in how he built his courses, but in the detail of his sketches long before construction began. Take our 10th green, for example, wonderfully restored by @cdpgolf1 . Photo credit: @Hainesy76

The view of the 1st green perfectly encapsulates what Fowler and Simpson achieved here: interesting green sites and short walks between green and tee, allowing them to fit 18 strategic holes seamlessly into just 98 acres — ideal for quick rounds.

It’s not all about the course. We’ve been busy renovating the visitors’ lounge in recent weeks, with new décor, club chairs and more. It’s a big improvement but one thing hasn’t changed: the view over the 1st, 3rd, 9th and 18th. See it for yourself:

The firm fairways and extra distance off the tee make going for the green in two on the 4th — and taking on the greenside bunkers — almost irresistible.
