I’m no longer posting on what was once Twitter, firming up a choice I made a year ago. I’ll be on Blue Sky under the same name. My DMs remain open here for private correspondence. Better still:

Lucy Connolly pleaded guilty. She admitted she was a criminal. What is the alternative to a randomly chosen jury, if someone accused of a crime says they have a defence that they are entitled to be put in a fair trial? Does Mr Philp support the ancient right to trial by jury ?.

It is astonishing that Labour councillor Ricky Jones, who was caught on video calling for throats to be slit, is let off scot free - whereas Lucy Connolly got 31 months prison for posting something no worse. The development of two tier justice is becoming increasingly alarming.

The law does not say this. It says that jail is the starting point *before the judge deducts for any mitigation and guilty plea*. But more importantly this was not a Crown Court sentence so Tom Tugendhat’s complaint cannot be acted on.

As of end of June, victims and the alleged attackers in 461 rape prosecutions had been waiting between one and two years for the case to go before a jury/complete. Three years ago, there were 93 such cases. A year before that in 2019, there had been 33 waiting that long.

I’ve seen big legal battles v govt come and go - and the most important take years. But if these men get their day in court years after their campaign was blocked, it really will be quite extraordinary: Nuclear bomb test veterans relaunch legal action
