It was a privilege to work for Brian Walden and to know him He set the standard for political interviewing. He was a wonderful extempore speaker, one of the best in the post war HoC, had an encyclopaedic knowledge of politics, and much else, was charming, and great fun.

Very sad. I knew Phil from his days on the FT to his time in No 10 and beyond. Always decent and straightforwardeven in the most difficult of political times. A good person to deal with on Weekend World and On the Record.

Ironically bag reached Munich airport at 6 pm yesterday, so has now taken longer to get from airport to centre than from Heathrow to Munich.
