1/9. The last 18-hrs have seen headlines appearing in print & online leading on the first paramedic on scene at the Manchester bombing not treating anyone. Many from the pre-hospital & amb world have rightly challenged these headlines, this is exactly what is supposed to happen
Many congratulations to Professor Alison Leary
@alisonleary1
on her appointment as MBE for services to Spectator Safety and Medical Care at
@MillwallFC
. Alison is the medical coordinator for the crowd medical services at the club which is a
@BASICS_HQ
scheme.
This headline misrepresents just what the first amb clinician on scene does, primary responsibilities are command & control to enable patient care rather than delivering treatment.
Meet our new chairman
@iampaulgates
. Paul is a consultant paramedic, chairman of
@bearsmedics
and immediate past Hon Sec of
@BASICS_HQ
. He is the first paramedic to become chairman of the Association and is well known & respected within the pre-hospital world.
Covid-19 brings all sorts of concerns & fears for those on the front line as well as those they leave at home. The
@BASICS_HQ
wobble line launches today, it provides a listening ear & a friendly voice for anyone providing pre-hospital care, member or not, & their families.
It is with great sadness that we heard tonight of the death after a short illness of
@BASICS_HQ
&
@liveshq
stalwart Tim Nuttall. Tim was a regular mbr of our teaching faculties & past educational facilitator. Our thoughts are with his wife Kiki, his friends & his family.

#FEMinPHARM
Dr Priscilla Noble-Matthews was a Sussex GP who practiced prehospital care well into her 80s. A firm favourite with her
#999
colleagues she died late last year. Remembered with great fondness by many of todays practitioners.
Occassional we need to blow our own trumpet . . . All through covid our members have continued to provide pre-hospital care across a range of employment &
#voluntary
settings. Particular mention must go to our affiliated schemes who despite a ⬇️ in funds maintain their services.
A totally misleading headline that ignores the fact that the first amb clinician on scene, as this paramedic was, undertakes command & control to enable care & does not provide treatment. The para was totally correct in taking this approach & your headline should reflect that.
Everyday, often out of sight of cameras & as prt of the wider team,
@BASICS_HQ
scheme responders deliver enhanced & critical care. They are all
#volunteers
who have undertaken specialist training to enhance their core professional skills for the pre-hospital enviroment.
4/9. Why is this important? The truth is always important & no less interesting. Secondly the professionalism & integrity of the individual concerned is maintained & respected. Thirdly because misrepresenting a profession or organisation unjustly undermines public confidence.
As we prepare to enter 2020 & the
#YearoftheNurse
we are proud of our RN mbrs. Slowly there is greater integration of RNs within pre-hosp care, a number of RNs are responders, RNs chair schemes, our faculty includes RNs & our immediate past chair is a RN.
@CNOEngland
Save the date, the BASICS pre-hospital emergency care conference 2019 is announced. 3rd & 4th Oct in Warwickshire. At the Chesford Grange Hotel. See you there?
We recently received a further £250,000 donation from
@HelipadHELP
. Yesterday a number of our affiliated schemes received news of grants being awarded to them enabled by this donation. We are so grateful to the trustees & team at the HELP Appeal for their ongoing support. 2/...
2/9. Journalists & their editors seek to grab attention to gain readership but it is important that in doing so they do not, as in this case, mislead & misrepresent the truth of the matter.
5/9. Sticking w the individual at the centre of such stories; they are already suffering post incident distress, inaccurate & misleading reporting adds to this & leads to increasing
#Moralinjury
which is debilitating & deeply distressing.
6/9.
#Moralinjury
& mental health of 999 workers has been a focus of many media reports (many extremely supportive) & yet it seems that sections of that same media are willing to compound & contribute to an individual’s distress all for a sensationalist headline.
.
@BASICS_HQ
#volunteers
from our affiliated schemes across the UK will be providing their normal services throughout the Christmas period; thank you ladies & gentlemen.
BASICS is very honoured to be one of the few orgs worldwide to have the privilege of awarding a Laerdal Award. This year awarded to Prof Gavin Perkins,
@BASICS_HQ
Dr (
@MARSmedicalteam
) & internationally acknowledged researcher in resuscitation.
@laerdalmedical
Did you know that
@BASICS_HQ
affiliated schemes provide
#volunteer
doctors, nurse & paramedics who respond to 999 calls on behalf of the
#NHSAmbulanceServices
to provide enhanced & critical care to the most seriously ill & injured?
#VolunteersWeek2021
might be over but our scheme based volunteers will continue as they did yesterday & the days before. Extraordinary men & women providing expert pre-hospital immediate care throughout the UK in support of the NHS ambulance trusts.
The pre-hospital enviroment is complex enough with adding to those complexities by attempting ‘heroic’ & quite unnecessary procedures that are doomed from the outset. Its not only about knowing your limits, its about knowing the limits of the situation
#learnfromthebest
#VolunteersWeek
The backbone of our work always has been, and continues to be the
#volunteers
who give their time, energy & skills to save life & limb in their communities. Thank you one & all
3/9. Even if not covered at the inquiry, a call to any number of authoritative bodies (ie.
@ParamedicsUK
,
@BASICS_HQ
,
@AACE_org
,
@NARU_Education
) wld provide context & understanding to assist in delivering an accurate & contextualised story w accurate headline.

schemes & their
#volunteer
responders have continued their incredible work throughout the
#COVID19
pandemic. An amazing grp of men & women who do the day job & then give so much more in their communities to save life & limb as well as maintain their training schedules
8/9. Schools of Journalism, engage with us & ask us to come & lead workshops or contribute to your courses. These is an important topics that need understanding & addressing.
Pandemic, foul weather &
#volunteers
continuing to make a difference. A massive THANK YOU to every one of our members who is volunteering in whatever capacity & also to ea of our affiliated schemes.
We have opened a further round of scheme grants, full details on how to apply are contained within the recent schemes newsletter. These grants are enabled by an annual donation from the
@HelipadHELP

The scale of todays explosion in Beirut is unimaginable. Thinking of all involved & in particular those responding to the injured & dead whether as a good samaritan act or as a member of the emergency services. Their sense of being overwhelmed is heartbreaking.
#volunteerweek2018
, the chances are that this evening and overnight
@BASICS_HQ
volunteers will be called, at no cost to the NHS, to deliver enhanced care to 999 patients whether in their home or on the street. 👏👏👏
Professional paramedics, doctors and nurses form a vital part of our volunteering team. If this is you, and you're interested in getting involved, we want to hear from you!
7/9.
#theMedia
, please do not ignore this or think that the matter is in the past. Talk to us & others, understand the issues at stake & strive to deliver the news accurately & with respect. It is in all of our interests.
Our 1000th member is in the bag. A massive welcome to
@lukechamberlame
who grabbed the limelight & will be receiving not only his welcome pack but also some other goodies to mark the occasion.
Every year we receive a thank you card and a financial donation from a grateful mother whose childs life was saved by

doctor in 1995. These sort of things mean the world to us & we are so glad to have been of help.
We are delighted to announce that we have received a generous donation from the
@HelipadHELP
of £250,000 annually to be used by our schemes to purchase emergency vehicles, associated costs and equipment

Nurses are a valuable part of pre-hospital care whether as a
#voluntary
responder member of a
@BASICS_HQ
scheme, one of our faculty, a MH nurse, nurse practitioner or any other role in the NHS, the military, event medicine & the voluntary sector.
#InternationalNursesDay2021
We are so not over this yet!
Our schemes are attending call resulting from holiday like behaviour involving alchohol & excessive exuberance as well as RTCs. Please reconsider, we really don’t want to be mee5ing you under these circumstances, its far too hot for all that PPE too!
1/3. We have been informed of the death of Dr Nick Foster. Nick was a longtime member of the Association & provided care as part of
@EMICS999
& prior to that the Rutland Accident Care Scheme. He was first on scene at the Kegworth Air Crash in 1988 . . ./22
As the UK potentially faces some inclement weather,
@BASICS_HQ
responders, many of whom use their own vehicles, spend considerable amounts from their own pockets to ensure they are ready to respond when called up
#volunteers
As many prepare to celebrate tonight a small army of emergency services staff incl a variety of
#volunteers
will be there to keep you safe, those from
@BASICS_HQ
included. Do your part,

today. If you get the opportunity to learn or practice CPR today please do so. You are most likely to need to provide CPR to someone you know & love. Early CPR really does buy time in the chain of survival and its absence cannot be compensated for later on.
This morning our team are in Cardiff providing a bespoke course for clinicians from
@SJACymru
to support them in their event work. Tomorrow sees them working & learning at the Principality Stadium.
Just think @ this for a moment; FIVE

@BASICSdevon
responders at one incident. Donations such as that recently received from
@HelipadHELP
are vital to
@BASICS_HQ
#volunteers
providing this extraordinary level of cover. Repeated nationwide by an amazing bunch of people
Air amb charities to bid for share of £10m funding - Great news for our Air Amb colleagues, but

We would really like to seek your views on a slight change to our logo. The aim is to make it sharper and to add part of the original red back into it. We also propose using the British Association for Immediate Care, rather than BASICS
Thoughts welcome -
Today we have the first of two, back to back, PHEC courses getting underway at
@YarnfieldPark1
in Staffs. Our course elf
@drkatiem
again instructing along with Tim, Heather & John.
When you see a
@BASICS_HQ
member providing care you do not see the many additional hours they have given to prepare for that moment. They have to undertake a huge amount of specialist training & maintain their skills throughout course of their

career

#VolunteeersWeek
pre-hospital care encompasses many different areas of practice.
#volunteers
bring expertise, enthusiasm & specialist skills, each does so with dedication & a strong commitment to make a difference. Thank you, each & every one for what you do
After 3.5 years of hard work, incl the developing & implementation of a strategic plan, the restructuring of
@BASICS_HQ
moved into its final stages last evening. We wake up this morning w our members now transferred to the restructured charitable company limited by guarantee 1/4
Funfact; inthe early days of pre-hospital immediate care our founders, all GPs, faced opposition from hospital surgeons and casualty doctors (it was the early 1970s) regarding the dangerous practice of cannulation!
Coming in 2020; new suite of pre-hospital courses, grants & bursaries for mbrs & schemes, a cracking conference, new governance arrangements & completion of org restructuring, intro of long service awards & a commitment to further support pre-hosp immediate care for all
Huge thanks to all schemes & members who have done their bit in some of the worst weather for many a year.
#volunteers
Thanks also to those who have aided & abetted through warm drinks, dark humour and the odd push/tow.
#beastfromtheast
So grateful to the
@HelipadHELP
for the small matter of a cheque that popped through the post. Once again your £250K donation will enable our schemes to continue delivering pre-hosp care through onward grants. No photo opportunity this year but our gratitude is just as deep.

The key is not the profession providing the care but rather the training & experience in pre-hospital care. Different skillsets combine to provide optimised care for pt. UK experience brings together range of professions that together deliver enhanced care on scene & into hosp.
