Wildfire prevention and climate action benefit all of society, and should be paid for accordingly, from the state general fund. Shifting costs off utility bills would be a way to reduce pressure on rates and make the shift to a clean and equitable energy future easier. 6/x

The bottom line: PG&E’s northern California service territory is a particularly difficult place for utility services. Safety is not optional, and must be addressed. But utility bills are not an endless supply of funding. 5/x

High rates increase energy burdens for low-income households, drive away energy-intensive businesses, and are an impediment to home and vehicle electrification. Endlessly rising costs are putting our climate and social-equity goals at risk, and raising questions of fairness. 4/x

Ava’s generation costs are also rising as utilities, CCAs, and corporate buyers all seek new zero-carbon resources. It is a seller’s market for new generation! But generation cost increases are modest compared to transmission and distribution. 3/x

PG&E rates have risen 127% since 2014, 4x that of inflation. Most of that will be used to “reduce risk” for PG&E. Namely: putting power lines underground in high-risk areas, more tree-trimming, better grid monitoring and controls, and fixing 150 miles of gas pipelines. 2/x

Electricity rates across California have been rising fast. Ava customers now pay twice as much to PG&E for delivery as they do for the electricity itself. In a guest spot for @EnergyNewsData, we went deep on rates. Here’s a thread… https://t.co/EPwFa6SB6A
