Since 2009, the south end of Wrightsville Beach has been home to one of the largest Black Skimmer colonies in the state. WHQR public radio joined us in the field to hear how we’re working to educate beachgoers and protect this iconic bird: https://t.co/Kc75ri3q4z

Check out this beautiful Northern Flicker taking a dust bath. Birds occasionally use dust to remove access oil, water, and mites. The process is very similar to humans using shampoo to remove dirt and oil from their hair.

We’re entering peak fall bird migration here in NC. An estimated 515,400 birds passed through our state last night with more predicted tonight. You can help by turning off lights at night from 11pm to 6am. Even small homes with outdoor lighting can become fatal obstacles.

Places protected by conservation trust funds are huge economic drivers, especially for local communities. Birdwatching and wildlife viewing alone are a $1 billion industry in NC. The funds are how we preserve North Carolina’s natural heritage for future generations. #ncga

#DYK that Osprey’s possess a reversible outer toe that allows them to grasp with two toes in front and two behind? Barbed pads on the soles of the birds’ feet help them grip slippery fish. These advantages are just a couple reasons they’ve been given the nickname “fish-hawk.”

If Black Rails disappeared from NC's marshes, would anyone notice? We just published an op-ed arguing that we should all be paying attention to the plight of this secretive, mouse-sized bird because of it what it tells us about the future of our marshes: https://t.co/b9Suz6zaF5

Our Pine Island Sanctuary on the Outer Banks is home to more than just birds. Deer, turtles, and even bobcats thrive at the sanctuary. We set up trail cameras, so we know what areas different species use and how we can best manage them into the future.

Cool bird alert! Our coastal team spotted the first Northern Harrier of the season at Masonboro Inlet last week. The bird was observed during an International Shorebird Survey—an effort to monitor the migrating populations of some of the longest distance migrants in the world.

Big news! Our brand new Motus Tower at Pine Island picked up a male Piping Plover heading south for the winter. This data can provide valuable insights into the resources birds rely on throughout their annual life cycles, helping us better conserve them: https://t.co/CIldmwm9XX
