Gains in the EU market are not enough to compensate the total negative effect from a 30% tariff in the US. Sri Lanka's WAP exports to the world will decline by 8% while rubber sector will contract 12%. What is the net effect on total exports of the country ? (14/n).

Current tariffs are temporary. The US will impose reciprocal tariff. The given rate for Sri Lanka is 30%. We modelled the impact of a 30% tariff assuming the US deals with EU, Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines will take place. We did not assume any additional retaliaiton (10/n)

The economy-wide effect of the current tariff structure is positive, mainly fuelled by trade diversion of apparel sector due to high tariffs on CHN. Positive real GDP effect is 0.07%. We might need to be a bit cautious as trade diversion does not happen fast enough (9/n).

As the model is a global one, capturing economy wide effects, we can see that LKA exports to the EU-27 may go down when trade adjusts to the current tariffs (7/n).

This is how RPP (rubber) sector exports to the US will change compared to 2024, as a response to current 10% and various other sectoral tariffs. Some rubber product are exempted from additional tariff benefiting the exporters of those products (6/n).

In rubber sector, relative prices change in favor of a few countries. Canada and Mexico benefit from USMCA exceptions facing a lower tariff. In addition trade destruction is also larger. So Sri Lanka may see significant loss of rubber exports to the US even with current 10% (5/n)

The tariffs reduce the US apparel imports by 8.8% with large negative impact on CHN. The diverted trade goes to countries like Sri Lanka, increasing Sri Lanka's apparel exports by 17.4%. This is a result of relative price advantage due to high tariffs on CHN (3/n).

Although wearing apparel exports may benefit from current tariff structure, it is negatively affecting rubber exports. The model shows that -8.5% loss of exports to the US compared to 2024 base year (4/n).
