Is it a hot take to say that Pokemon raising the stakes in their stories has had the opposite effect? Saving the world or fighting god with Pokémon is boring and corny and cliche, whereas I was extremely motivated to wipe the smirk off this asshole's ugly face
Scope creep in this series went crazy in such a short time fr. In RBGY/GSC you're running around exploring the world finding critters and making friends, and 2.5 games later they're sending you to hell to fight the devil. Like what are we doing here

I hate in general that games now think it's outdated design to have minimal cutscenes and let the "story" simply be driven by the player's exploration of the world. Games all need a hundred cutscenes and a million dialogue boxes so they need a half-assed plot to go with them

this is so nice to see because it's a total inversion of what *everybody* was complaining about with mega man when these games were new. when the context of the time is removed and they're allowed to be judged on their own, people see they're great!

If you’re into JRPGs you should definitely give CRPGs & WRPGs a shot. Playing Dragon Age Origins, Fallout New Vegas & Divinity 2 definitely opened eyes to what an RPG CAN be.

I’m not a huge fan of EXP Share in modern day Pokemon games. I like that you actually had to use your Pokemon to level them up back in the day. We’re JRPG fans. We grind.

you ever think like "held back by the tech of its time" is a nothing statement for games its like "they made it that way because thats the way they decided to make it". its always used in reference to stuff that was considered an unbeatable classic like ten years ago too
