Australia is pretty much one giant sand pit. No surprise then that lots of critters have shovel-like adaptations to dig out a living beneath the soil surface. Take for instance the narrow-banded shovel-nosed snake (Brachyurophis fasciolatus) which can teleport into soil with ease

Dozens of threatened Australian species are back from the brink, but many are reliant on fenced-off safe havens. 💬 "We should not rely on [safe havens] to take species off the threatened list," write @katherinemoseby (@UNSW) + John Read (@UniofAdelaide).

Dozens of threatened Australian species are back from the brink. But many are reliant on fenced-off safe havens and could not survive the feral predators of the wild. True safety is harder

Still a long road to real recovery for Australia’s threatened species. Safe havens are great, but just a stop-gap. Important to recognise in the debate about de-listing species. @AridRecovery co-founders @KatherineMoseby & John Read in @ConversationEDU https://t.co/YMvRSmtXRb
