7/7 Knowing the overall direction and strength of microbial relationships within hosts, and their generalizability across hosts, should help us learn how microbial ecology scales up to affect microbiome assembly, dynamics, and host health.

6/7 surprisingly, many of the patterns we found in baboons were replicated in a time series data set from human infants. Bacterial family pairs that were consistently correlated in baboons also tended to be universal in babies 👶🦠👶🦠👶!.

5/7 We also found that when a pair of baboons has especially consistent correlation patterns, they tend to have similar baseline microbiome community compositions and be genetic relatives (but not social group members!)

4/7 The correlations come from abundance trajectories modeled by @kimberlyeroche. She used multinomial logistic-normal models to learn a smoothly evolving Gaussian process to model abundance trajectories for each taxon in each baboon. This is the most negatively correlated pair.

3/7 You can see these highly consistent patterns in the heat map below. The columns show correlations for each distinct pair of microbes. The rows show the correlation patterns for each baboon.

2/7 Despite ecological and evolutionary processes that might promote individualized microbial relationships (e.g., priority effects, horizontal gene transfer, functional redundancy), we find that bacterial correlation patterns are largely consistent across hosts.

1/7 Do different hosts have different microbiome ecologies 🦠🧬🐒? @kimberlyeroche tackled this question in the @AmboseliBaboons, and we're ready to share the preprint!
