To imagine the extent of damage consider that this is just ONE wave, invading and battering just ONE house in Burgeo. The destruction as Fiona dwindles over many, many hours will be considerable. My friend Steve Hiscock and
@onthego
correspondent with BBS sent me this:

@BradGushue
was my seat mate on the longest plane journey in the history of flight from Vancouver to Toronto yesterday, and again from Toronto to St. John’s. A real gentlemen with the fans on board YYT flight. Sharing the team’s bronze 🥉 with fans:
Broke a snow shoe and me mitts blew 🌬away when I tried to fix 💨it!Home sweet home. I spent a week of long days at the office and I was NOT going to sleep there.
@DorisCowley
has the fire on, and may need a beverage and a Scrabble victory. G’night Twitter!

For those who insist I should have asked the question in ‘another venue’, 2 points: 1- Where is this other venue? 2 - When a minister responsible for Occupational Health and Safety resigns during a pandemic after police seize her phones: That’s relevant news.

The B Ed degree I could not pick up in person
@MemorialU
arrived today. Been a while since I’ve been this excited about mail. Thanks to my family, profs, CBC managers, all of Natuashish, and many gifted students-teachers (and students) over the past few years for their support.
As Rome shuts down its airport, and other European nations seal themselves shut.... should Newfoundland use its island advantage (and zero Covid-19 cases so far) and close down the airports and limit ferry traffic to food imports? Discuss.
#nlpoli
Major kudos to
@colemansfoods
for informing their employees they will be paid for Blizzard days even though their grocery stores were sealed shut by all the snow and the states of emergency. What are other companies doing for their employees? Please share your story!
I think social media -for all of its ills- has resulted in some large companies deciding to pay their employees (most of them minimum wage earners) for missed
#blizzard2020
days. Might be deemed the ‘Colemans Effect’.
Police seizing electronic devices from a cabinet minister is serious news. I expected blow back for asking a question —but I waited for the final minutes of the briefing. Reporters access to
@PremierofNL
is limited the House is not sitting, and it’s my job.

I’m about to announce on the 📻 that I will be leaving
@onthego
and the CBC in March. I’m grateful to the corporation for a wonderful 32 years. (How’d that happen? ⏳) But most of all: Thank you NL-ers for listening and watching. It’s been an honour. Now, to other opportunities!
Happy New Year! Here’s a lovely attraction to start your 2022, the ingenious community Christmas tree made of lobster pots in the small fishing outport of Salvage, NL.
Leadership credit where it is due:
@colemansfoods
first out of the gate to announce it was paying its workers during Snowmaggeddon; first to install plexi-glass Covid-19 distancing barriers for its cashiers, first to (temporarily) halt flyers during pandemic.
Instead of banning hand shakes in 🏒, perhaps players who are incapable of learning the value and courtesy of sportsmanship should be banned or tossed? A few unruly goons shouldn’t affect such a policy. We’ve become a national story.
Maybe the next NL Tourism ads should be along the theme of “The locals don’t tell you about October ‘cause they like to keep it for themselves.”

In order to confront an irrational rumour mill about timing, I’d like to clarify my leave of absence from
@cbcnl
: I’m taking a few months off to teach at a school to complete an education degree. People who know me understand this has been a planned goal for the past 6 years.
Before the afternoon shifts to Canada Day celebrations, consider taking a moment this morning to think of the generational loss July 1 signifies for our province.
Success with dad who has dreamed of fly fishing in Newfoundland for many, many years. Probably the best day of fishing in my life: They were everywhere!🎣 Caught several, kept one each.
I’ll be stepping away from Here & Now and CBCNL in 2021 from January to the end of April. I’m taking a leave of absence to complete studies
@MemorialU
Faculty of Education
@PeterCBC
will be joining
@CStokescbc
&
@a_brauweiler
. Thanks for your support.
Bittersweet retirement news:
@wendy_mesley
leaving CBC after more than three decades. Super intelligent, elegant trailblazer. Wendy, all the best in your next pursuits.
I’m heading back to St. John’s after what was deemed essential travel by my employer. I have followed all public health protocols. But, I am surrounded by passengers from various destinations — caution is required. Consequently, I will remain -and work- from home for 14 days.
With just over 30 Covid-19 cases and -our three major industries (oil, fishery, tourism) in peril- it is not an act of treason to ask political leaders about a re-start plan. When to activate it is another matter, but “Where’s the plan?” is a legit, crucial question.

Foote/Mitchelmore Affair
@TheRooms_NL
is far from over. I worked on Parliament Hill for 8 years, Quebec’s National Assembly for a few: I have never received so many brown envelopes, e-mails, late night phone calls, and leaks. More, MUCH more to reveal about this
#nlpoli
story.
With our cat Brazzle missing for two days, I camped out at 10PM with a dish of smelly sardines. I set up a camera in case I fell asleep 😴💤and then… at a quarter past midnight… the missing cat came back! 😹😻 THANK YOU to everybody for all of your helpful tips! He’s home!
For the first time in ages, I can’t watch the news. The first thing you are taught as an educator is that your number one responsibility, and constant on-going priority as a teacher is to provide your students with a safe place to learn. I can’t process this slaughter in Texas.
Privileged to announce that
@CBCNews
has invited me to be part of the coverage team for the Beijing Olympics. Much different than what I covered there in 2008. China’s changed. It’ll be a challenge. And, J-school pal you may know is going too. I’ll catch up with
@adriearsenault
👰♀️ 🤵🏻 30 years ago we both said “I do” 💍 and
@DorisCowley
is still my best friend, which is remarkable because you can detect a flaw or two over three decades. XO Dodo.
Just as all my teacher friends are retiring, I’m suddenly qualified. There are some great profs at
@MemorialU
’s faculty of education. Very proud to be part of the "Covid Class of ’21." Many superb young teachers have already landed jobs. Good luck next week!
I’m leaving CBC in 2 weeks and my colleague and on-air pal during
@sjmorningshow
days,
@nancywalshcbc
announced she will be winding down her amazing career at the end of April. Nancy really cares about solid journalism and has great mind for analyzing what truly matters. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
When I drove home after the news from the Confederation Building I saw one of our MHAs walking home from work, heading down the Parkway on a beautiful evening. Sadly, for safety reasons, many (most) places in the world where this cannot happen. We’re more fortunate than we know.
Just accepted an offer to teach a course
@CNAjournalism
this autumn about news and current events. Have always enjoyed being a guest speaker at educational institutions, now I’ll get the challenge of helping people learn this wonderful business.
Apart from the severe damage and on-going threat to human safety, Fiona’s going to require a massive cleanup. One little cove near Burgeo, courtesy of my friend Steven Hiscock with the Burgeo Broadcasting System.
Word nerd 🤓 in me says ‘staycation’ sells NL travel short. As a “townie” going to Signal Hill Middle Cove, etc. = staycation. To me, Burgeo, Gros Morne, Bonavista, & countless other locations are every bit as much a ‘vacation’ as going to the mainland, Europe or elsewhere.
Burgeo house Fiona update: First part of video was near high tide, after dissolve is about an hour later. Notice the buildings (and oil tank) that weren't there. These videos come from friend Steven Hiscock courtesy of Burgeo Broadcasting System.
Forget about the weather. What I’ll miss about
@ryansnoddon
is how positive a person he is. Kind of person who changes the atmosphere and mood of an office for the better. Big shoes to fill on so many levels. Good luck to you and your family. (Can I have your parking spot?)
Congrats to my Here & Now colleagues for pulling off an informative, quality show last night under difficult circumstances. You can watch it here via
@YouTube
if you missed it:
Having Dr. Janice Fitzgerald bluntly tell us that we are all going to get this, strikes me as one of the most significant moments of the pandemic. As has been discussed in other provinces, success depends on staggering how we get it and start truly living with Covid.
#nlpoli
Just a reminder, the P.U.B. tells journalists it does not do interviews. Consequently, explanations of the ‘market forces’ and secret formulae it uses to raise/lower gas and heating oil are not obtainable. Nothing to see here, just pay the costs, don’t ask why.
Sadly, can’t see this house in Burgeo area surviving the day. More astonishing video courtesy of my friend Steven Hiscock with Burgeo Broadcasting System.
🥳Great memories, laughs and tears with my many colleagues new, mid-career, and, ehrm… older ones. Last day at the CBC with a humbling celebration. My good 📺 shooter colleague Darryl Murphy grows impatient with my slow departure…
Kudos to
@costcocanada
staff in St. John’s who defused a volatile situation. A burly 50-year old man refused to wear a mask and became loudly profane, yelling that everybody else “were all sheep”. He was verbally abusive to at least 6 staff members who remained calm. He left.
Bit disappointed the biggest tech acquisition story with
@Nasdaq
&
@Verafin
did not get the deserved attention it should have from national media. I think it’s the biggest deal in Canadian tech sector history, full stop. Bad news from here gets enough attention in Canada.
Captive Audience:
@rickmercer
joins me on Here & Now to talk about his coast to coast to coast New Year’s Eve Special from a shed. What better venue for Canadians to gather in at the crossroads of 2021/2022?
I’ll tell you this about
@debbiecoopercbc
(and I’ve worked with a lot of other hosts) she is the epitome of what it means to be professional. When personal life throws us nasty stuff many bring it to work, not Debbie. A refined, discrete class act. Good luck in retirement!
My favourite comment in all of the great CBC coverage of D-Day was from a gentlemanly veteran on
@cbcasithappens
“I’ve spent 75 years trying to forget what happened, now I’m trying hard to remember.”
#dday75th
If a woman needs to return here because her mom died but is denied because of Covid-19 regs, maybe we ought to consider granting her the same exemption we give to construction workers from Quebec and other provinces?
Deeply saddened this morning to learn my friend and sports broadcasting colleague Carl Lake
@thesportspagenl
has died. He cared so much. Offered decades to local sports scene, half a century behind the plate. Carl, you’re forgiven for the bad calls. I’ll miss you.
I underestimated how difficult it is to say goodbye to kids you’ve been teaching and learning with for 3 1/2 months. Going to use the French “au revoir!” instead. Until we meet again.
STORY:Ella Meade's a talented young hockey player who competes in a boys league. She’s been told she can’t have a shot at a tryout with the provincial girls’ team because she’s not registered as a female player. She and her parents are furious with Hockey NL for discrimination.
Chemistry student from Anhui, China arrives
@MemorialU
in the 90s. Only has 2 suitcases. Now runs major pharmaceutical firm; has given $1-million in scholarships to MUN chem students; $1.6-million to Sick Kids Hospital. One of many amazing
@MemorialUAlumni
stories tonight.
Unexpected ❄️ snow joy in Beijing 🇨🇳 brings about happiness in unexpected ways for everybody in the monitored Covid compound. Sanity is snapping… as you shall see here:
Disappointed I won’t be able to attend
@MemorialU
convocation ceremony this morning to get my B Ed degree. But want to congratulate all fellow graduates on this big day. My generation does not give you guys/gals/others the credit you deserve. You’re great, inspiring teachers.
Home after teaching in Labrador for the past 3 1/2 months. My final video. Thank you to the wonderful students, parents, and teachers in Natuashish for an unforgettable experience.
Is Costco losing business because it doesn’t offer plastic bags to its customers? Somehow the hoards of shoppers who go there have found a way to overlook the inconvenience.
#nlpoli
Feeling like a character in a Kafka novel as I prep to leave for Beijing. Unable to visit friends or colleagues, working in a largely empty CBC HQ in Toronto as most CBC-ers work from home. Then, a China blast from the past at the elevator doors:
This hardship assignment in Happy Valley Goose Bay means having to get used to Arctic Char and large speckled trout.
It’s a burden with which I must contend.
Where else can you disappear in a kayak for 3 days and find “Magic Arm”, “Fair And False Bay”, “Bloody Reach” and “Rum Island”? Or, explore an abandoned Beothuk archaeological site, and play a wee bit of campsite Scrabble by the ocean? What a place. What a vacation!
