Link to our new papers in Matt’s thread below. We show hippocampal activation in a sequential navigation task that can’t be mapped, and that people can shortcut without distal cues to help them map the environment, unless sections are trained separately. Then you need distal cues.

We have two new papers out - both inspired by the literature on parallel memory systems.

This work was funded by @ESRC and was mostly the work of the excellent @MattGBuckley and the twitter-less Dina Lew, along with other brilliant collaborators.

The results fit better with a learning-based perspective of hippocampal function, as opposed to a map-based perspective, with hippocampal-caudate systems required for model-based learning but not for model-free learning.

Our first neuroimaging paper is out! We show, contrary to some theories of spatial learning, that the hippocampus and caudate are active when people navigate a route without the opportunity to map their environment.

I was very very drunk when I wrote this last night. It’s only because of the retweet notifications that I even knew I’d written it. However, I spoke the truth - Matt is great and you really should work with him. A great opportunity.

New: Remarkable interview with Tory MP @GullisJonathan @PatrickChristys on @GBNEWS last night in which he told how he has bullet proof cling film across the windows of his home, & a panic button in his bedroom. And, to anyone planning to threaten him at home, he says this:
