@lcgeorge13 @MRCCTU But there are tests out there that do a good job, getting results in a minute, rather than having to wait hours for a lab result. This difference could save lives, if point-of-care tests were widely available, as children with severe anaemia need blood transfusions urgently.

@lcgeorge13 @MRCCTU There are various point-of-care haemoglobin tests on the market. Not all of them are suitable for children as they can't detect low enough haemoglobin levels to guide clinical practice, or aren't reliable in very hot/humid conditions. And some aren't accurate enough.

Pleased our systematic review on the use of point-of-care haemoglobin tests for kids in LMICs has been published. These are important for quickly identifying which kids have severe anaemia & therefore need an urgent blood transfusion @lcgeorge13 @MRCCTU

I learnt so much through being part of this collaboration & it was a chance to work with people in countries I've never worked with before. Reading the transcripts of the focus groups was eye-opening for me, and a reminder that the work we do in trials is all about people. 8/8.

The next stage in our work is looking at the 'patient-centred outcomes' available for DR-TB trials, to see which actually measure the things that are important to people. We need to make sure trials collect info on things that matter to patients as well as doctors. 7/8.

Fears & worries were common: people worried about whether they would be able to stick to treatment & endure side-effects. They worried about infecting others 😷 & the long-term consequences of the disease & treatment: would they ever go back to being their old selves? 6/8.

DR-TB also affected people's ability to work & do household chores. Some people lost jobs or had to change career. Some people struggled financially 🪙. Getting to the point in treatment where they were well enough to return to work & chores was really important for people. 5/8.

The experience of DR-TB treatment wasn't just about symptoms & side-effects. DR-TB can have a huge impact on people's relationships. Some people experiencing being shunned by family and friends. Where families continued to provide love and support, this made it easier. 4/8.

DR-TB treatment is gruelling, involving taking lots of pills 💊💊💊 (often with lots of side-effects) for months. Side-effects and symptoms that were visible were particularly troubling for people (such as weight loss and changes in skin colour). 3/8.

We carried out focus groups with people who'd recently completed or were undergoing treatment for DR-TB in Mongolia, Georgia and South Africa. We used story stem methods to get people talking about the experience of treatment is like - what matters to them. 2/8 🇿🇦🇬🇪🇲🇳.
