At a time when need for rental assistance is greater than ever, we can't afford to go backwards. We need more rental assistance, not less.
House Republicans are proposing a major cut to housing vouchers that would result in more homelessness & evictions. Congress should be expanding rental assistance to help more people afford housing, not cutting it just weeks after passing trillions in tax cuts for the wealthy.

These bill's reforms will make existing resources easier for people in need to access and use, and help communities use those resources strategically. They should be followed by additional measures needed to build a future where EVERYONE has stable, affordable housing.
A bipartisan bill introduced this week by Senators Rounds, Smith, Crapo, and Reed would make it easier for people to use housing vouchers to rent safe, stable housing and would improve homelessness assistance programs.

Meanwhile, the Trump Administration’s policies would increase and worsen #homelessness by 1) Slashing HUD staffing and proposing deep cuts to rental and homelessness assistance that solve and prevent homelessness

State and local advocates are fighting back, defeating many harmful bills and introducing bills that prevent, halt or reverse policies that punish people experiencing #homelessness.

We know affordable housing and voluntary supportive services are key to solving and preventing #homelessness, but this wave of harmful state and local bills and the Trump Administration’s policies will make homelessness worse.

The #SCOTUS decision in #JohnsonvGrantsPass set a dangerous precedent for people forced to live outside. Since then, hundreds of state bills and local ordinances have been introduced to punish unhoused people.

Instead, policymakers should build towards guaranteed federal #RentalAssistance and ensure reliable funding to cover community-based services like #MentalHealth, #SubstanceUse, and housing navigation.

Everyone one needs and deserves a safe place to sleep. But one year ago tomorrow, #SCOTUS decided in #JohnsonvGrantsPass that cities/states can fine or arrest unhoused people for sleeping outside even if they have nowhere safe to go.

Like the House bill, the Senate bill "would cause some 16 million people to be uninsured and unable to afford needed care." Millions more will see their health care costs rise. Unacceptable.
Rather than course correct, Senate Republican leaders are rushing to advance a bill that is in some ways even more destructive and harmful than the unpopular House Republican bill. The Senate must reject it.

This will make things even harder for the millions of households already facing unaffordable rents, putting ppl at higher risk of losing their housing. The Senate should reject this approach and focus on making the essentials more affordable, not less!
House Republicans passed a bill this morning that fails the people they promised to help. It would raise costs on families across the country, making it harder for them to meet basic needs & weather life’s ups & downs — and give ever larger tax cuts to the wealthiest households.

Household budgets are tight. Cutting #Medicaid & #SNAP will put households already facing unaffordable rents at greater risk of losing their housing & undermine efforts to address #homelessness. We need to make the essentials more affordable, not less! .
As House Republicans work to advance their bill to the floor, their agenda couldn’t be clearer: stripping health care & food assistance away from millions & raising families’ costs— while showering ever larger tax breaks on the wealthiest. My statement:
