3️⃣ Opposing Joint Motions: The talus and calcaneus can move in opposite directions, possibly affecting joint load distribution. This highlights the need for personalized biomechanical models including the talus as its own bone uncoupled from calcaneus motion. ⚙️.4/5.

2️⃣ Substantial Variability: Surprisingly large (>5deg) out-of-sagittal plane motion and inter-individual differences in joint contributions to overall joint complex motion further supports the ankle joint as a multi-planar joint, which has many degrees of freedom. 🌍 .3/5.

1️⃣ Talocrural Joint Dominance:On average, 80% of sagittal plane motion comes from the talocrural joint, but 20% of the classic “flexion/extension motion occurs also in the subtalar joint! The subtalar joint is essential for sagittal plane motion!🦶.2/5.

🩻Methods: Using CT scans & biplanar videoradiography, 3D models highlight key shape factors affecting ankle joint motion. 📊Findings: Size-independent factors (talar dome shape) influence joint curvature & talocrural rotation axis providing new insights on joint mechanics.

4/5 🔍 We also observed substantial variation in the amount of rotation about and location of these axes across individuals. These findings emphasize the need for individual approaches when considering foot form-function relationships in the human foot. #GaitAnalysis #Variability.

3/5 🦴 Our findings show that 1) rotation axes are similarly oriented and 2) the midtarsal & subtalar joints move about the subtalar joint axis defined by individual talus morphology. #OneTeam #FootMechanics.

2/5 📽️ Using biplanar videoradiography, we captured 3D bone kinematics during walking, running, & hopping, and coupled it with computed tomography scans to build individual talus coordinate systems based on articular facet geometries. #Locomotion #Research.
