Tocqueville thinks of government power not only as the government being able to complete a task but also as the speed at which it can do so Interesting to read in light of Abundance

Tocqueville repeatedly stresses the lack of variance in wealth, intellect and knowledge compared to Europe. Much contrary to today where America is the land of extremes and Europe that is thought of as mediocre

Everything is just getting better all the time in medicine. The lines you want to go up, they keep rising. The lines you want to go down, they keep falling. Transplants, cancer survival, infectious disease incidence... most trends are hopeful.

The Ancient Greeks and Romans probably did not paint their statues in gaudy, matte, heavily saturated colour as most museums claim. They *did* paint them, but: • A 1st-century AD mosaic from the Villa San Marco in Stabiae depicts a statue of a boxer with realistic shading. •

I’ve been privileged to watch the progress of this important engineering project for over 10 years. It all started with this humble manhole cover at the intersection of Boat Club Road and Chamiers Road. (1/n)

My worldview: 1. We should get the "massive economic growth" red line to happen (don't ban Waymos!) 2. We should try even harder to not have the purple death line happen (avoid x-risk!) 3. It's wild this is by the Federal Reserve and such outcomes are not taken seriously

Great article all around but the most shocking stat was the Korean sex ratio that is worse (!) or at best at par with the *worst* Indian state (Haryana's is about 113 boys/100) girls

this is worrying not because people in government are using AI to write notifications, but because it reflects the sloppiness with which they are doing so

Contemporary India is the sort of place where the government wants to put a monitoring app on every person's phone but also the sort of place where the outcry about the plan can cause a reversal.

Indian factories are constrained by a dwindling resource: trust. I wrote in @rootsofprogress about how AI agents could solve this (and other associated problems), if they can navigate the politics.
