Professor, studying, exploring and restoring forests for wildlife and people. Happy dad with lively twin boys.

Looking for a postdoc to help us to make some significant advances in understanding forest recovery and restoration. Working with @usceduau, @ForestPlots, @GFB_Initiative and many other collaborators from across the world. Reasonable potential for ongoing employment too.
We are recruiting for a new postdoc to join our team for 18 months, modelling the global and regional impact of vines on tree growth and forest recovery from disturbance. https://t.co/s1nX7rqMBy

Forests aren't recovering from cyclones in the Australian Wet Tropics and vines, especially rattans, are likely to be the cause. Our work is ongoing, but this is a significant first step. Great work led by PhD student @EmmaMackintosh4.
The first research output from our Australian permanent sample plot network, led by @EmmaMackintosh4, shows that forests struggling to recover from cyclones are not recovering biomass and overwhelmed by liana infestations.

I am a little late in sharing this one as coincidentally, I was in Tanzania, at the same location where we carried out this newly published work. Another fantastic output from @askngute as part of our @FoRCEexperiment.
I'm beyond excited to see another #PhD paper out in @JEcology! While highlighting the nuanced role of #lianas on #tree dynamics influenced by elevation & soil, we show that the recovery of #tropical #forest structure from disturbances is predictable along environmental gradients.

🌸 Ecosystem restoration aims to reverse damage, restore habitats, and revive biodiversity through efforts like reforestation, wildflower meadow enhancement, wetland restoration, and coral reef restoration 🪸 But why do some restoration projects succeed while others falter? 👇

Fantastic work Alain. A really excellent thesis!
I'M THRILLED TO BE OFFICIALLY #PhDone! My #PhD Thesis 'Investigating the relationship between #liana abundance and #tropical #forest recovery' has just been accepted, without revisions! My advisors @Andy_R_Marshall @marion_pfeifer & @prof_schoeman led me throughout my #phdlife

Here is some recently published work from my lab led by @askngute, who just passed his PhD at @usceduau with NO corrections and an award form our Dean. Amazing work Alain! ⭐️
Our recently published global analysis shows that lianas outcompete trees in disturbed, warm, dry, lowland forests. Disturbance-temperature interaction suggests a tipping point of 27.8 degrees C, when lianas become more dominant.

Workshop with forest managers discussing implications of our @FoRCEexperiment research for managing the Australian Wet Tropics last month. Many people “hate” the native & exotic vines now smothering the forests after all the cyclones and logging! But should we be cutting them?

📢Exciting news: the Caribbean island of Redonda has been granted protected area status! In just a few short years, Redonda has been transformed from barren ‘moonscape’ into a thriving wildlife sanctuary, & will now be one of the largest protected areas in the Caribbean.

A new PhD started today. She asked for general advice for the first few months. This was my advice: 1. Don’t work evenings or weekends 2. Don’t aim to prove yourself (to me), I’m already convinced of your capacities 3. Go for a walk when things dazzle you (1/3)
