Comments and constructive criticism always welcome. Those who are uninterested in real debates or resort to slurs and insults instead of arguments will be blocked immediately so that they can be among their own kind. Rudeness against anyone will be sorted out as well. You decide.

The dream of every Muslim is simply to be treated the same as any other New Yorker. And yet, for too long, we have been told to ask for less than that, and endure hatred and bigotry in the shadows. No more.

In reality, there is not the slightest reason to believe that Erhürman’s election victory will change anything about the division of Cyprus. For more, check FAZ. (Even better: Subscribe to FAZ! This might be your last chance...) https://t.co/A5cMi7duB1

Ein gemäßigter Kandidat, der eine enge Anbindung an die EU versprach, gewinnt die Präsidentenwahl im türkischen Norden Zyperns. Doch Tufan Erhürman bleibt von den Entscheidungen in Ankara abhängig.

The election of Tufan Erhürman as new president in the Cypriot north this Sunday was also called “a potential gamechanger” by some analysts. But what is the game? And what change? https://t.co/TfyQ6cVZnc

“The last chance for (…) Cyprus to reunite may be seized,” the text starts, and adds: “A breakthrough may be afoot as some key people met together at UN headquarters in New York City recently.” (People met. This is your last chance. Leave it or leave it.) https://t.co/NZcuyw3WLb

The following text from 2024 is a particularly good example of “last-chance” reporting. It contains zero substantial arguments:

In 2018, parliamentary elections in the Turkish north and presidential elections in the Greek south were again described a “last chance” for Cyprus. Another one. A last last chance. As in: The never-ending story, part II. https://t.co/X3lNO1POIv

Reviving peace talks would require serious political will to go back to a deal left on the table last year.

(I didn’t bother to inform our readers of the Crans-Montana talks, as I was sure they would fail. Why waste the reader’s precious time with reporting about a non-event?) https://t.co/7vUWxXcCIL

The Cyprus talks in Crans-Montana in 2017 (allegedly) brought yet another last chance: “There is a general feeling that this is indeed the last chance to reunite the island,” this commentary reads. True: The last-chance-talk is about feelings, not facts. https://t.co/C7W1OOzr5v

In 2014, Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoğlu claimed there was yet another “last chance” for Cyprus. (Forgot the context, but it doesn’t matter anyway, as it was never real.)

Another example, this one from 2010. “Negotiations in Cyprus at a critical juncture” this text for the Greek think tank Eliamep claims, adding it was “probably the last chance” to solve the problem. file:///C:/Users/tens/Downloads/Eralp_2010%20(1).pdf

In 2009, another “last chance” came around. This time, planned meetings between Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat served as a pretext. “Some suggest the talks are Cyprus’s ‘last chance’” the Guardian wrote. https://t.co/qXff1Kn2dY

Another example from 2008: “Once the Greek Cypriot presidential elections this month are out of the way, all sides should appeal to the UN to return to mediate a comprehensive settlement. This time, it may really be the last chance.” https://t.co/SWLwgBEoj3

Just two years later, another “last chance” was declared. This time, the Cypriot presidential elections were hyped as a “potential springboard to re-launch negotiations.” With very little credible arguments.

After the real chance of 2004, there have only been pseudo-chances for reunification on Cyprus. In 2006, EU Commissioner Olli Rehn warned of a “last chance of progress for years” if Cypriot ports weren’t put under UN control and opened, following a Finnish proposal.

The 2004 referendum demonstrated that the South, especially the Greek elite, which lives well with and from the status quo, does not want to pay the price for a unified Cyprus. This is still the case today. https://t.co/J9jkWJJ2FD

Fair enough. But since Greek Cypriots in 2004 did not understand (or accept) that reunification means sharing power and privileges, they will have to live with the consequences of their unwillingness to share. The consequence is permanent division. https://t.co/mXw6DGt36L
