Not as cool as #sharks, but also saw these #dolphins yesterday near @Scripps_Ocean pier. They were beautiful to watch and it was a gorgeous day! #LaJolla #SanDiego

This was yesterday off #LaJolla, the morning after the remnants of #HuricaneHilary passed through #SanDiego. Clearly, the leopard #sharks were unfazed and the water was surprisingly clear. See the white flashes? Those are sharks rolling over! @PLNU @Scripps_Ocean #sharkscience

Tons of leopard #sharks and bat rays in only knee-deep water this morning off #LaJolla, the day before #HuricaneHilary due to roll into #SanDiego. Will be interesting to check on them again after the storm. Stay safe out there! @PLNU @Scripps_Ocean #sharkscience

@PLNU @Scripps_Ocean This is a big female, likely pregnant. I would love to know what the pups look like!

This stunning, extra spotty leopard #shark was seen off #LaJolla Shores Beach this weekend. This unusual color morph deviates from the typical pattern of horizontal saddles with spots. Video by Peter Demman (Instagram: pdemman). @PLNU @Scripps_Ocean #sharkscience #SanDiego

This rolling behavior is common in #sharks, including leopards. They are rubbing their head, back, and sides on the sand, likely trying to dislodge ectoparasites, like these copepods. @PLNU @Scripps_Ocean #sharkscience #sharkweek #Tech4Wildlife (underwater video by Kenneth Merk)

Lastly, just for fun, here are four individual #shark tracks to show some of the variation among the aggregating leopard #sharks. @PLNU @Scripps_Ocean #sharkscience #SharkWeek #Tech4Wildlife (4/4)

This density 'heat map' captures the overall structure of the leopard #shark aggregation. Contours (from outside) are 99%, 95%, and then 90% to 10% (in 10% increments). @PLNU @Scripps_Ocean #sharkscience #SharkWeek #Tech4Wildlife (3/4)

Here, 180 leopard #sharks have been tracked using #computervision from #drone footage captured off #SanDiego (that's a harbor seal that spooks a few of the sharks). Next three tweets show tracking results. @PLNU @Scripps_Ocean #sharkscience #SharkWeek #Tech4Wildlife (1/4)

Aerial #drone footage of a leopard #shark aggregation off #SanDiego (4x speed). We are using the program TRex (by @po7ooo and @icouzin) to track individual sharks, to study their movement patterns relative to their neighbors. @PLNU @Scripps_Ocean #sharkscience #SharkWeek

We found that cookiecutters sharks loved swordfish. They would be covered in bites. Never saw anything like this though! Those bites likely happened while the fish was on the line... Captain Reels In Swordfish Covered In Cookie Cutter Holes

It’s that time of year! Discussing recent #shark sightings with CNN’s ⁊⁊@kimbrunhuber⁩. As #sharkfest ends and #sharkweek begins, remember there is no such thing as shark-infested waters. That’s their home and you can’t infest your own home!
