Clinical pharmacy services have seen a vast expansion in Hungary through the past decade from virtual non-existence to becoming the most attractive pharmacist role in the country. Hospital pharmacy workforce has also doubled during this period. Recent events may break this trend.

The situation is even more puzzling as it has only been 9 years since the previous outsourcing endeavor crashed and burnt - affected hospitals having to in-source pharmacies once more and settle sky-high debts incurred by private operators.

Without any prior consultation, the Hungarian government has passed a law yesterday that sets the scene for outsourcing all hospital pharmacies to a single contractor. Since the text only focuses on procurement & logistics, grave concerns arise for clinical pharmacy services.

Three great days have passed in Belgrade at the 8th National Congress of Pharmacy in Serbia. EAHP’s Director of Finance, Nenad Miljkovic and I were talking about Pan-European approaches to advance hospital and clinical pharmacy practice during the upcoming trying times.

Today I’m already in Belgrade to meet up with Serbian pharmacists at the National congress for all pharmacy profession. I’m really excited to discuss what we can do for our patients in these crisis-ridden times.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to join our dear colleagues from Slovakia to celebrate their 30th annual congress of hospital pharmacy in Bratislava.
