After two Israeli mothers were told that their kidnapped sons were murdered by Hamas they set out on a journey to discover the truth. They discovered a grim reality: some of the hostages in Gaza have been killed in Israel’s military offensive there against Hamas.

Hi friends :) I have moved to the UK for the next chapter — a masters degree in history at

as a Rhodes Scholar. Thank you to my family, friends and mentors who made this possible. I am excited for this new adventure. My view from quarantine👇
Very interesting piece by
@robkhenderson
. Why higher education’s emphasis on victimhood actually gives affluent candidates an advantage. Something that I have been thinking about a lot lately.
From what I saw in a journalism class that we took together at Stanford,

Hundreds of abandoned cars on highway 1 leading to Jerusalem. They belong to tens of thousands of protesters who are marching in a last-ditch effort to stop the Netanyahu government’s judicial overhaul.

Powerful protest and strike today in Israel against Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul. Well over 100k protested in front of the Israeli Parliament as the so called “reform” of the judicial branch began to be voted on
A real dream come true for me today: I finally had the chance to visit Pompeii, something that I have wanted to do since I was a kid and one of the reasons I first fell in love with history.

Emily and I have different views on Israel but that really doesn’t matter. Even Stanford’s conservative student paper came out against the campaign to cancel her.
Being in Israel these days I find myself alternating between extremes: utter despair from the coalition’s actions and uplifting inspiration from the historic civic awakening taking place here.

It’s hard to assess historic events as they are unfolding but I have a feeling that tonight will be remembered as the the night things changed in Israel. Something has snapped.
Both Russia and Ukraine find value in a similar model - Israel, as the classic example of a modern Sparta, a lone ranger state that relies on the force of arms to survive. But this model is a double-edged sword, esp. for Israel. My latest with

on the surprising anti-government protests in Ashdod. Saturday marked an escalation in violence against peaceful protesters as the country nears a boiling point.
Saar Idan, who attended the late-night protest, carried a sign with a photo of his abducted cousin, Tsachi Idan, 49. After the news of the mistaken shooting, he was very worried that his cousin had been killed. “These have been hard days with the announcements of dead hostages.”

This week, my beloved friend, teacher and thesis advisor, Mark Mancall, passed away. It is hard to put into words what Mark meant to me. This Stanford obituary to which I contributed a few sentences gives a peak into the life of an extraordinary man.
Netanyahu has been prime minister since I was 14. I can barely remember any other leader before him. I really really hope that he goes so that a new era of Israeli politics can begin.

A lot has changed since the last time I was home in Israel 8 months ago: Raanana, my sleepy hometown, is now home to the new sitting PM of Israel (with much added security around his block) and is also the center of anti-covid/anti-government protests. Who would have thought?

This is consistent with what I have heard from other older protesters at Balfour— a feeling of disbelief and grief over a country they remember. This is what motivates them to take to the streets despite the risk of Coronavirus.
Today Netanyahu will be replaced as PM after 12 consecutive years in power. Here are some of the people who have been protesting against him every week for a year now.👇

Been thinking a lot lately about how the Israeli education system (which I am a product of) erases the country’s founding story which is leftist. The remnants still exist, but we no longer know how to see them. And yet, people still walk around among us who embody this past.
In the Israeli education system, we no longer learn about the socialist values that helped found Israel. 75-year-old Rachel Hercowitz is part of a Labor Zionist generation that is slowly disappearing.
