While this may not be convenient for politics and fear mongering, I’m glad to see people calling attention to the truth: crime rates are dropping, and fast. This is being accomplished thanks to the work of municipal leaders and smart, integrated crime prevention strategies.

An estimated five million children have at least one parent incarcerated during their lifetime. We need policies and practices that keep us safe, not ones that perpetuate cycles of violence, harm, and trauma.

And that the funnel out of prison should be expanded for those who choose to take that different path. Our work of justice reform isn’t about the fringes, it’s about the millions and millions of people who agree we can do better together.

The idea that the funnel into incarceration should get narrower, that those who do need to be incarcerated should have an experience that is fundamentally different and more transformative, that people have more chances to choose a new path.

The biggest misconception is that the right and the left don’t agree on the need for criminal justice reform. But actually, the broad center of this country (which is quite big) do agree on the basic concepts we fight for every day.

Research shows Americans agree that we should not send people suffering from serious mental illness into incarceration. People agree that we should have rehabilitative programs. People agree that once you’ve done your time, you should be able to get a job and housing.

Many countries look to America and emulate harsh policies and practices that are focused on punishment for the sake of punishment. I want this country to model something better and more innovative to the world. And I believe we can do that.

Those with an incarcerated immediate family member spend almost $4,200 a year just to stay in touch with and support them. Check out the full report:
