Snorting coke doesn't make you cool or fun. It benefits violent groups and hurts the environment. In a recent paper, @micasviatschi shows that in Peru, demand for coke increased child labour. Those kids were later more likely to end up in jail:

France's players are mysteriously falling ill ahead of the World Cup final. Coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe it's the magic of Argentina's witches... @jacknicas , @nataliealcoba and I, with spellbinding pics from @OjosdeAnita and Sebastian Lopez Brach:

Two years ago, I was one of the first English-language journalists to publish a profile of Javier Milei. Yesterday he was elected Argentina's next president. Read my early coverage here---there will be many updates to come...

Sex guru, cosplayer, economist: Will Javier Milei be Argentina's next president? If he wins the election, he will have a claim to being one of the world's oddest leaders. I sat down with him last month for three hours. This is what I came away with:

Gabriela Mistral, the first Latin American to win a Nobel Prize for Literature, is experiencing a revival among young Chileans--and Pablo Neruda, her former student, is increasingly being cancelled. I wrote about it for the @nytimes :

Some thoughts on @gabrielboric 's triumph in Chile. 1: the centre has both been overthrown and reaffirmed. 2: FA's rise shows need for traditional parties to respond better to social demands. 3: FA could breathe new life into LatAm's delegitimised left.

I wrote about Lula's ambitious foreign policy. In his first two terms Lula put Brazil on the map. But the world has changed. Brazil can be an environmental steward and regional leader--global peacemaker may be a stretch:

Some good news on LatAm :) The region now has 27 unicorns, up from 4 in 2018. The disruption of oligopolies in various sectors could create more inclusive growth and force traditional companies to innovate. My piece this week:

Chile’s new constitution could enshrine some of the world’s most extensive indigenous rights. But that may also sink the document’s chances of getting approved. My piece in today’s issue:

The future holds much for my fabulous continent and its people: from the energy transition to growing demand for food, the world needs LatAm as never before. I feel lucky as hell and thankful for the kindness of others that made it all possible. Adiós Argentina, olá Brasil!

In the past 2.5yrs I’ve profiled the shaggy-haired libertarian who became Argentina’s president, covered Chile’s vigorous attempts to rewrite its constitution, interviewed Colombia’s 1st avowedly left-wing head of state, explained the secrets of Uruguay’s success (boring=good)…

BREAKING: 222 political prisoners in Nicaragua were freed and put on a plane to DC. The gov banned them from ever holding public office and suspended their citizenship rights. But it's still a big win for the prisoners and their families--Viva Nicaragua Libre!!!🥲

Chile's election was a victory for democracy in every sense: participation reached its highest level since voting became voluntary in 2012, a new generation of leaders has come to power, and both candidates moved to the centre. Challenges ahead? Yes, but new possibilities too.

Nicaragua's dictatorship is holding sham trials against political opponents this week. Lesther Alemán, a 24-year-old student leader, and Doria Maria Téllez, a revolutionary icon, may get 15 years in jail. Gov also cancelled legal status of 5 unis. Ortega-Murillo= total cowards.

My piece this week looks at the how inequality contributes to anti-incumbent votes in Latin America; with @ryanavent : Other factors matter too: high interest rates in the US, rising inflation, pandemic scars. But inequality is an important one.

I wrote about two seeming trends this week: autocrats are tampering with constitutions to stay in power; and charters keep getting longer as social rights are added to them. The trends appear unrelated, but may be fuelled by discontent with democracy.

Chile was one of few countries with protests in 2019 to have found an institutional exit to a social crisis. Now it becomes one of few countries where a polarised election ends peacefully, more moderately than it started, and with guarantees of a smooth handover. USA, learn!
