I saw three concerts and listened to a ton of new releases in June. The 12 albums discussed on my latest podcast only scratch the surface! Plus: crate digging in New Orleans. Find it on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

The Doors - s/t (Elektra, 1967/79) At the heart of this album filled with big ideas about European art song, performance art, pop music, psych rock, and the blues is a small band, economically and passionately bashing it out. Densmore’s kit is about to fly apart! #5albums50s60s5

The Beatles - Revolver (Parlophone, 1966/2014) A leap even from Rubber Soul, not only is this a life-changing collection of songs and sounds, it’s an object lesson in artistic achievement and ambition. And only three years from Please Please Me! #5albums50s60s5

The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man/Turn! Turn! Turn! (Columbia, 1965/1976) While the most unforgettable songs are by others (some cat named Dylan, etc.), the dose of California sunshine they lavish on these Greenwich village transmissions is quite effective! #5albums50s60s5

The Beatles - Please Please Me (Parlophone, 1963/76) Sharp guitars, throbbing rhythms, vocals that shout, soar, and harmonize - this is the sound of sheer desire: notice us, join us, feel us, love us, pay us. And it can still give me the chills! #5albums50s60s5

Harry Belafonte - Calypso (RCA Victor, 1956) Pure joy from start to finish. The arrangements serve the songs and Belafonte’s embrace of his Caribbean roots translated the genre for a new audience. There’s a reason it’s the first LP to sell 1M in a single year! #5albums50s60s5

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman (Impulse, 1963/MCA-Impulse, 1986) The paradigmatic jazz vocal album, with the finest players accompanying a voice of unusual gravity. Lush Life has never sounded better! #5albums50s60s5

Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue (Columbia, 1959/77) As elegant as chamber music and as swinging as a big band, this is sheer perfection sculpted out of sound. There are exciting live versions, too, but this is one jazz album that never needed to be performed on stage! #5albums50s60s5
