Officials told other prisoners they were taking the men to Ghezel Hesar prison in Karaj. Fears that authorities are planning to execute the five men imminently emerge amid an execution crisis in Iran which has involved dozens of executions in this prison. 2/3.

Babak Shahbazi’s lawyer submitted a request for a judicial review of his case several days ago, but the Supreme Court immediately rejected it. Global action is needed NOW urging Iranian authorities to halt any plans to execute him! 3/3.

Babak Shahbazi was sentenced to death in May 2025 for alleged espionage for Israel. Authorities denied him access to a lawyer for months after arrest & subjected him to torture, including prolonged solitary confinement & threats to harm his family, to extract “confessions”. 2/3.

Those forcibly returned to Afghanistan, including women & girls, artists, dissidents, former officials, journalists & HRDs, face a real risk of human rights violations by the Taliban. Under the non-refoulement principle, states are prohibited from returning anyone. 10/12.

After the escalation of hostilities b/w Israel & Iran on 13 June, the mass expulsions scaled up more. On 22 June, Iranian state media quoted a border force official saying “all unauthorized nationals must leave Iran” – a term often used by the authorities to refer to Afghans 7/12.

On 12 March 2025, Iran’s Centre for Foreign Nationals and Immigration Affairs, which is under the Ministry of Interior, announced that these “headcount” documents for Afghans would automatically expire the year 1404 on Iran’s calendar (corresponding to 20 March 2025). 5/12.

Until March, millions of Afghans were permitted to temporarily legalize their stay through “headcount” documents & w/this document had limited access to services, including state healthcare, public education, work authorization, banking access & enter into rental agreements. 4/12.

Iranian laws don't offer a reliable pathway to naturalization, except through a few exceptional circumstances. As a result, most Afghans retain a precarious status, even after decades of living in Iran & children are not automatically granted nationality even if born in Iran 3/12.

Iran has hosted one of the largest populations of Afghan refugees & asylum seekers in the world. Per @Refugees, as of 2022, there were more than 4.5 million Afghans in Iran, and 1 million fled to Iran since 2021, when the Taliban returned to power. 2/12 .
