I have another book coming out! 😍 Demi/bi pairing! Ex-best-friends competing for the new girl! I'm sure they won't accidentally fall for each other or something!
I don't care if a "straight" actor plays a queer character, if a "straight" writer writes queer lit, if a "straight" musician sings about queerness, I don't care. Chances are that most of them are doing it because it resonates with them in a way that isn't our business.🧵
"It's appropriation of our community!"
Why do you think that? Because they don't wear a label? Why do you feel you can dictate who should be allowed to create/consume queer art? Do you think your public label entitles you to interrogate and harass people for their identities?
"If they wear queerness like a costume, they should expect backlash." Is it a costume? Or are they exploring their identity? Why do YOU get to decide which one it is?
Btw, did you know that many people discover they're queer because they engage with queer art/characters/style?
"How will we know if we're supporting authentic creators??"
Nobody is stopping you from dedicating your support to openly queer artists. If you only want to support people who are "out" and fit your definition of "authentic," do that and leave everyone else alone.
Those who draw rigid boundary lines on who they believe should be involved with the creation of queer content are actively harming the community's most vulnerable members--those who can't safely come out. Those who aren't allowed to. Those who aren't sure yet.
This took me 20 secs. Copy/paste:
"I am writing to demand a ceasefire. The UN has voted for a ceasefire resolution yet nothing has been done to save the Palestinians under siege. As your constituent, I am holding you accountable for putting a ceasefire into action immediately."
The UN has called for a ceasefire. While it is not legally binding, you can use it to call the White House or your representatives and demand a ceasefire right now. If you're averse to phone calls you can go to and email them with the form
One of the biggest threats to queer creators, both out and closeted, comes from our own community. It's tragic that the people who should be uplifting queer art are instead some of the cruelest gatekeepers, all in the name of icing out anyone they feel "doesn't belong."
I don't care who's producing queer art, whether they currently identify as straight, whether they're private about those matters, etc. I wish we could just produce an environment for people to safely engage with queer art and explore their identities without fear of retribution.
I said I wouldn't contribute to this conversation, but fuck it. I'm tired. I'm angry. I'm disgusted that people in the queer community have made identity exploration so terrifying for artists. I hate that so many of us have been forced to out ourselves and STILL risk harassment.
The author who insulted and bullied the readers leaving her 4.5 stars on Goodreads dropped to a 1.66 avg rating, so if you learn any lesson today let it be this one.
*sigh* since this needs to be said:
this thread does not capture all the nuances of this discussion (ie cis people playing trans roles, straight voices historically being prioritized over queer ones, etc.) this was a personal rant and doesn't embody the whole conversation.
Aaaand this thread is already getting bigger than I expected it to, so I'm going to mute before the queerphobes and gatekeepers find it.
Sorry to self plug but if you want to support a queer author who is Tired Of This Shit (me) here's a link -->
Irks me when I see posts like "BESTSELLER received 16 rejections before it was accepted, never give up 🥺" like show me authors who were rejected 100+ times. Show me authors who queried for years. I could eat 16 query rejects every day for breakfast, it ain't encouraging

Marginalized authors should be allowed to write stories that don't center around their marginalization.
Marginalized characters should be allowed to exist without publishing demanding a trauma-based narrative from them.

If a white author is being critiqued by BIPOC for their portrayal of race in their book, it is not your job as a white person to jump in and say "It's okay!" or "Don't listen to the haters!" It's not your job to accept their apology on behalf of POC who were negatively impacted.
Not to be dramatic on main again but i really can't believe after 7 years of querying + several shelved books + losing / rediscovering my love of reading + mental breakdowns + repeated heartbreak to the point of numbness i'm actually going to be a published author, wow, wowie
I know a lot of you are querying after

Dear Ms. Last Name,
I think people need to know that when an author (esp a marginalized one) calls out problematic behavior / content but doesn't "name names," it's not because they're being cagey. It's because there are massive power imbalances in the industry and speaking out can cause backlash.
It's almost my 26th birthday and I have a phenomenal agent, a 2-book deal, and a new job with an incredible boss + benefits (which my degree helped me obtain).
It does get better.
It's my 24th birthday and I have absolutely no future, no escape from my abusive job, and no use for my degree! Please tell me it gets better than this

tips for tomorrow!:
1) Post your fave pitch between 8-8:30. But never on the dot. Pin it immediately to your profile.
2) NEVER end your pitch with a question
3) I found most agent "likes" dropped off after lunch, so I made my best pitches my first pitches.
You will ALWAYS have more authors rooting for you and supporting you than treating you as competition. Anyone who says otherwise clearly hasn't found their writing community.
So I'm not claiming to be a pro, but my query formula has gotten me some success in the past. Does anybody want me to post it in a thread here tomorrow? Please like, comment, or RT this if you're interested!

If you only want to support queer books you feel are "authentic" because the author perfectly fits what you envision to be good rep, fine.
But the moment you attack authors for not looking how you think they should look, for not disclosing their identities, you are a gatekeeper.
I wish we could pretend this doesn't exist but everyone subtweeting and asking if it's true only adds to the hype, so--yes. It's real. Multiple bestselling authors joined together to get involved with NFTs.

Any of you have aspirations for what you hope to be known for as an author?
I want to be a "will wreck you emotionally but always delivers the happily ever after" kind of author lol
Fave thing about book twitter is that when you tweet something like "I love romcoms!" an author will undoubtedly comment "Not romcom but I write post-apocalyptic scifi if you're interested!" and link their book
Maybe I'm just looking for some pitlight encouragement lol, but who out there would read a queer m/f romance about two bi ex-best friends who start a competition for the new girl's heart and slowly begin to fall for each other instead
I gently want to remind the community that agented authors are not above you. They may be further in their journey, but we all share the same aspirations. You're not unworthy of their attention or inclusion. Your stories and voices are equally valid. ❤️
I've critiqued ~300 queries at this point, and I am once more asking 80% of you amazing writers to please remove question marks from your queries! 😁
Examples:
"Have you ever wondered-?"
"What would happen if-?"
"Can she do X on time?"
"What choice will he make?"
"How will he-?"
I will still be hosting
#pitlight
. Even without pitmad, authors still deserve an event focused solely around encouragement, positivity, and making new friends in their community ✨😊
I hope to see you with your mood boards and pitches on March 5, 8am-8pm EST!
Bottom Line:
1) Don't read your reviews.
2) If you only want to see 5-star reviews, have a friend comb through Amazon/Goodreads/etc. and send you pictures of them.
3) Don't ever engage with reviewers unless you're thanking them for taking the time to read your book.
Hey LGBTQ+ twitter friends? Thank you. After having so much trouble accepting my sexuality, and constantly feeling broken and shunned, you've helped me to feel at home. I can now say I'm queer. Proudly.
I'M QUEER.
Holy hell, that feels good.
In 2013, I sent my 1st query. 10 years later, I'm finally a published author! If you like:

Saying this because maybe others need to hear it as much as I did:
You don't always have to strive to out-perform yourself. Your next book doesn't HAVE to be better than your previous. It doesn't have to be more meaningful, more intricate, more eloquent, more compelling. 🧵
Some queer readers prefer cuddly happily ever afters because it's their escapism from reality.
Some queer readers prefer darker, more realistic depictions because it resonates with their experiences.
Both are valid & personal preference doesn't mean one is superior to the other

. As my boss put it: success screams, but failure is silent. You’re always going to see posts about deals, signings, etc. What you DON’T see are the 600 rejection letters and 5 failed novels behind every happy announcement. Just. Keep. GOING.
I get that burnout is at its worst for everyone in the industry. But every time a few querying authors take to twitter to voice complaints, it causes discourse, particularly from folks in power who ask them to just "be kind" and "try to sympathize." (1/

Phrases I'm seeing in A LOT of queries today:
-Their world is turned upside down
-They must make a choice
-Rhetorical ?s ("Will she save them in time?")
-I'm seeking representation for my novel.
-Strong female protagonist
-After researching agents, I think you'd be a great fit.
I'm overwhelmed by the amount of you who asked to read about my journey to finding an agent. Thank you so much!
This is a long story (link 👇), but I hope, at the very least, it spurns encouragement for those wading through the querying trenches. ❤️
Hey, you. Stop doom scrolling. Write a sentence of your book. Get yourself a glass of water. Close your eyes for twenty seconds. You're not going to find the solution you're looking for here, so take this as a sign to focus on yourself, even if it's only for a moment. ❤️
Me in 2019: Should I have more than two queer characters? Maybe that’s too unrealistic…
Me in 2020: This here character is what they call a “Token Heterosexual.”
I cannot comprehend the amount of people asking "Should I participate in pitmad or no??" so let me lay this out:
Worst scenario: Literally nothing happens.
Best scenario: YOU GET A WHOLE ASS AGENT??
Just do it.

Congratulations!! You've supported an author and they appreciate you 😊❤️
Stop implying that the authors who have contracts under S&S are willing participants in the company's actions, you're villainizing individuals who rely on their writerly income over the corporation.
I just...feel like we should view apologetic authors who were unintentionally problematic differently from authors who willfully & maliciously engaged in abusive behavior.
Booktwt tends to dogpile indiscriminately, which makes it difficult to create a space for growth/learning.
I do just want to say that anyone who resorts to "stealing" ideas will never have the talent to properly execute them. Nor can they replicate the intricacies of your work from seeing one pitch/one snippet.
Their abilities are so far beneath yours. Keep going.
A lot of people are like....resigned to pitch contests like pitmad and dvpit and sffpit and if they don't get likes, they think they're done for??
Anyway I signed with an agent I cold queried so press on, my friends 👍
Casual reminder that most people read/write as a form of escapism, and it's okay to give your book and characters that happily ever after -- even if it's not "realistic."
It's ok to feel bitter about the trenches. It's ok to envy people who had an "easier" journey than you. It's ok to vent to your friends.
But something I'm seeing more frequently is people subtweeting success stories & lamenting their personal shortcomings while doing it.
"authors should just publish their book and vanish into the void" my guy many of us WISH we could delete all of our social media and hurl ourselves into the ether, but when your success relies solely on whether one of your tic tacs goes viral, you don't have much of a choice
Listen... 99% of writers won't see a single agent like on their pitches. If someone is successful, it's not only because of concept. It's because:
1) They had the right social connections.
2) They were "in the right place at the right time."
3) The algorithm lent them a hand.
To everyone feeling anxious after yesterday:
You don't have to cap your list of agents at some number going around on twitter. Only stop querying when you've run out of reputable agents you believe can passionately represent your work.
70, 80, 90+ rejections on a book is FINE.

Honestly, I'm BLOWN AWAY by how many writers came out to spread positivity! This is what it means to build a supportive community.
Please continue to give kindness where you can, and let me know if we should do this again! 😊
Yay! It's time to kickoff

2) Q'RT this tweet with your pitch & the tag!
I know y'all mean well but using a rejection count for a book released in 1962 is near meaningless for people dealing with the current querying landscape. People are racking up 100s of rejections, shelving books, battling emotional numbness, all while the world burns around them.
We talked a little about query letter bios yesterday, and someone mentioned it might be helpful to create a thread of bios from "success" queries that writers can look through!
Agented authors, please feel free to share the bio from your success query below! Here's mine:

If an agent notes on their website that their experience comes from, say, a lit magazine and a small press, go to those websites and make sure they aren't the founder of both the lit magazine and the small press.
Also, agents should not be signing en masse.

A few things you, an author, shouldn't feel guilty about:
✨ Being quietly envious of a friend's agent/deal announcement
✨ Not having the spoons to participate or boost people in a pitch/prompt event
✨ Having to take a soc med break because seeing so much success is draining
Do agents REALLY read the synopsis? Do they LEGITIMATELY scan that bitch from start to finish? Do I actually HAVE to write this bullshittery? Can someone tell me WHO created the synopsis, and WHERE they live?
