Not as smooth as I want it to be, but the cpu racers now go around the track much faster and more natural. What I like is that the AI is still pretty dumb but effective, yet still has some parameters for control and variety.
The city is growing. It might be a while before I put more art and assets in. The goal for the near future is to block out more tiles, iterate on those I already have and see what's fun to ride in or not.

I don't have much time for gamedev atm, but I've been playing around with this little sci-fi exploration vehicle the last couple of weeks. Still super rough. Not very happy with how the wheels are connected, but it's the best I could make it work so far.

Even at this rough stage, I'm very happy with the changes. Flow and readability are much better now and the randomness already creates some nice combinations of city tiles.

Super rough, but I'm playing around with the idea of what if Art of Rally was a rogue-lite.
Race between checkpoints in a small open world. You can earn extra fuel, repair your car and such to keep going. Something like that.

He‘s not very aggressive yet, but already harder to beat—as intended. You need to bounce those balls around to hit him on the side or the back.

This is a fairly small detail, but getting this right adds so much. The ghost can now leave the level instead of the game just loading the next one when the condition is met.

Got the absolut core working. I kinda want to avoid a money resource. You can earn extra seconds to extend the time you need to clear the next checkpoint. Or spend it to repair your car or on upgrades, when you think you are fast enough.

Finally got rid of overlapping in the city creation, so it's much more solid now. Also added animations back in and placeholder cars now spawn correctly. They are still too chaotic, but that's extra realism.

Taking the new animations for a test ride. Feels much more dynamic now. Transitions aren't great, yet. But, there's a little moment, where the cat rides out of the saddle after skidding to get back to speed, which I like a lot.

It works! First time the houses were generated when all the city tiles are loaded in.
Still need to fix some small issues, dial in LODs and set the right materials, but that should be simple. Wohooo!

I wanted to give this a go, ever since you posted this. Finally wrapped my head around it and got it to work. I does involve a lot more thinking at fist than just placing sone tiles. Worth the effort, though.
Still very much in the block out phase, but the core systems works pretty reliable now. I think next I want to work some more on the game flow.

City creation works well enough now to ride around in it (I didn't put the animations in yet).
Today I rebuilt the minimap. Works much better now. But, the little loading phase creates some disorientation. Will have to fix that.

Sometimes, you've got to learn things the hard way. I was really unhappy with the game’s performace lately. Turns out: instead of trying to be clever, just activate batching and be done with it. 😹 It's back to 60+ fps now.

A little bit of clean up on the animation states. They don't overlap as much anymore. I'm happy with the detail where the tire skids s little when you don't land a trick perfectly.

I wanted to make those little god rays last year. But, I didn't have a good idea of how to solve the issue that they needed to be invisible when the camera is behind them. Finally found a way to solve this with a shader.
