80 years ago, my great-grandmother Lily Ebert was in Auschwitz for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year. Today, at 100, she celebrates with 38 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. After a year of war and rising antisemitism, we hope and pray for a new year of peace.

The current excavation at Dalheim is essential to extending our understanding of women's religious life in the Middle Ages. As archaeologist Roberta Gilchrist has noted, women's communities have too often been overlooked or undervalued -- by archaeologists AND historians.

The #LWL team is following up on the results of a recent high-tech non-destructive survey of the women's precinct south of the church and interpretations of the space based on excavations in and around the church conducted in 1990.

Dalheim's women's monastery was abandoned in the first half of the fourteenth century -- its physical remains appropriated after 1429 for a new community of Augustinian regular canons
