This research reveals the complexity of social media use and introduces a novel four-factor structure. The Social Media Use Scale offers a comprehensive tool for measurement that we hope will be utilized by researchers and clinicians alike!

Consumption-based SMU relates to activities centered around consuming social media content (e.g., watching videos, aimlessly scrolling). In both studies, it was associated broad social media use and enjoyment.

Belief-based SMU reflects using SM to express and feel negative beliefs and opinions (e.g., making a posting about something you disagree with, doomscrolling). It correlated with traits indicating poorer emotional well-being and potentially maladaptive social functioning.

Comparison-based SMU involves activities centered around comparing oneself to others and one's own past (e.g., body comparison). Across both studies, it was associated with traits related to poorer social and emotional well-being.

Image-based SMU reflects activities tied to how one is perceived by others (e.g., posting positively about oneself, monitoring likes). In both studies, it correlated with traits indicating a desire to make positive impressions in the social world.
