Iraq's PM Mohammed Shia al-Sudani is claiming victory for his coalition, after early election results were declared. No single bloc is expected to achieve an outright majority. Al Jazeera's @alihashem_tv explains.

Preliminary results indicate that the coalition led by incumbent Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia’ Al-Sudani is leading in Baghdad, with more than 150,000 votes ahead of its nearest rival, the Taqaddum bloc headed by former parliamentary speaker Mohammed Al-Halbousi.

For many others, it’s business as usual, incremental shifts rather than upsets. The final results will determine how the new balance of power truly looks.

Another noteworthy trend: the rise of Qais al-Khazali’s al-Sadiqoun bloc, which appears set to expand its parliamentary presence, signalling shifting currents within the Shiite political landscape.

PM Mohammad Shia’ al-Sudani emerges as a key winner so far. He not only helped drive high participation, but early reports show him leading in Baghdad by tens of thousands of votes.

It’s also a major setback for Muqtada al-Sadr, whose boycott call clearly failed. After his MPs resigned in 2021, this compounds his loss of parliamentary leverage.

Preliminary thoughts from Iraq’s general elections: voter turnout hit 55%, that’s significant by Iraqi standards and a big boost for the government and the political process.
