Spatial heterogeneity of CSF related-noise in fMRI: why it matters and what we can do about it. My work at #OHBM2025 provides evidence for taking a region-specific approach when isolating CSF artifact in the subcortex. Swing by #P1358 on Fri/Sat to discuss!

Had a great time presenting my work at #CNS2025. A huge thank you to my advisor @sNeuroble for helping me bring this project to life. Incredibly excited to see how well received our poster was and I can't wait to share new developments at #OHBM this June! #fMRI #CSF

Improving fMRI signal quality starts with better noise modeling. My project at #CNS2025 shows how localized region-specific CSF correction may better isolate neural activity and increase sensitivity in the subcortex. Come by my poster #D138 to learn more! (Mon. 8:00-10:00AM) 🧠

Today, the lab threw a surprise Happy 1st Birthday party for NeuroPRISM lab 🥹. @ShearerHallee+@AlexFischbach_ made cake, photos, & even invented a game/app to predict word use changes over time. These two are unstoppable. Thanks for making our first year a blast! 🥳

9/9 To summarize, our results are consistent with the emerging perspective that the PAG serves a general integrative function—as opposed to a survival-specific function.

8/9 These findings suggest that one of the most well-known ‘survival circuits’ in the brain exhibits a clearly defined pattern of BOLD increase in the vlPAG in response to a task approximately as easy as remembering a phone number ☎️.

7/9 Both 1-back and 3-back tasks elicited localized BOLD responses along the entire rostral-caudal axis in the ventrolateral PAG (vlPAG) – a subregion commonly associated with 'freezing' behaviors in animals and anticipated breathlessness or subcutaneous pain in humans.

6/9 Both 1-back & 3-back elicited similar spatial patterns of whole-brain BOLD, with the 3-back showing widespread increases in the brainstem. These increases were not sig. greater than those in the 1-back, suggesting subthreshold brainstem BOLD increases even under mild demand.

5/9 Given the PAG’s small size (~14mm in height, internal diam 0-1mm, external diam 3-4mm) and its susceptibility to noise (CSF), our localization procedure aimed to enhance the spatial precision of PAG columns.
