Next arcade restoration project: Centipede
My

favorite arcade game. When one popped up nearby, I had to check it out.
Listed as working but with a dead screen. The cabinet is in pretty bad shape, but I bought it anyway.

Temps were in the mid 60's today. Perfect conditions for laminating the other side of the Centipede cabinet.
"WOW Dad! It's so shiny. I can see myself. It's like a mirror."
I was skeptical of buying this smaller handheld router, but it worked out perfectly.

After gutting Centipede of electronics and hardware and then washing it all a few months back, I wasn't sure if any of it still worked. I set the parts out on the bench and reconnected it all.
Success! All of the original 40 year old parts still work.

Years ago when I was an indie

karate game prototype. Thought one of the characters would make for a good test on the new 3D printer. 14 hrs later, here he is at 5" tall.

While Centipedes originally came with black t-molding, I opted for a splash of color.
Just line it up and tap it into place with a white rubber mallet.
45 degree snips of the spine allows the t-molding to fit nicely around the convex curves of the cabinet.

Cabinet graphics day for Centipede.
Lots of wrinkles. Doubt.
Positioned and clamped in place.
Peel back and stick down the bottom.
Flip the vinyl over and peel off the backing along with ample rapid-rac and lots of squeegeeing.

Weather was good, so built an 8x8x7 spray booth out of PVC and plastic sheeting.
Only the front, top, and back would be painted, so the sides were taped off.
I did a coat of primer followed by a black satin, oil based enamel paint shot through an air gun.

Peeling away the backing of Centipede's control panel overlay to expose the adhesive.
I polished the trak ball's carriage bolts with a spin in the drill under some 2000 grit sandpaper.
Trak ball reconditioned, rebuilt, and reassembled

Donated the original Centipede cabinet to some woodworkers starting up a new business, and they cut me a deal on a repro. Looks amazing.
That classic Centipede silhouette is one of the best of all time.

Installed a couple of mods: Pause and High score.
Pause: hit the P1 Start button to freeze the game
High Score: Allow player to log more than just 5 entries on the leaderboard.

Decades of dust and nicotine. The marquee had been vandalized during its previous life out on location. Many years ago somebody had carved into it with something sharp. A turn with the pneumatic polisher helped.

Disassembling Centipede's Trak Ball.

Previous owners really took the maintenance instructions to heart; this thing was drenched in oil.

I will be living at Charolette Airport’s Terminal B from now until some undetermined point in the future.

Centipede's control panel overlay adhesive wasn't going anywhere.
But with a little bit of stripper, not only did the glue come off, but the paint too.
A quick wipe down with mineral spirits, and it looks pretty good.
Off to the shop for powder coating.

Washed the power block and sound board out of the Centipede.
Same process: Sprayed with cleaner, scrubbed with a cheap paintbrush, hot water rinse, blow out with the air compressor, then put them under the shop fan for a couple days to ensure all moisture was gone.

Centipede stopped working entirely.
Fuse kept blowing. Replaced the pigtail style fuse with clips.
Replaced the original big blue capacitor with a new one.
Replaced the bridge rectifier.
Redid the soldering job on the HOT and the flyback.
Centipede lives again.

Stood back up, the machine wasn't working. Power was running to the other parts of the cabinet, just not the game.
I did not trust the crusty power supply so I ordered a new one.
The red LED on the board indicated zero errors.
Back up and running.

Rebuilding Centipede's Trak Ball
Old roller vs. new.
Old bearings vs. new.
Rebuilt roller assemblies in the now clean housing.
Nice and creamy colored new cue ball in place.

Time to strip the Centipede panel.
Along with being pretty grubby the surface is chipped in a few spots, and there's a bit of rust starting to creep in.
Thankfully, the overlay peeled away nice and easy. Not 5 minutes of work, and the graphics were off.

Coin mechs on Centipede were more complex than the previous I had worked on.
The original surface had flaked off and been painted at some point.
Decided to try sending the part out to a place that does powder coating. Saved me some time and chemical exposure.

Warming of the Centipede side graphics with the heat gun and a gentle pull folds the vinyl over into the T-molding slot.
Quick trim of excess with a utility knife, and the T-molding is ready to be tapped back into place.
Reassembled, and ready to play.

Gutted the Centipede machine and started cleaning up the wiring harnesses.
Into the bucket they go with a healthy spritz of Simple Green.
Next, a hot bath followed by a blow dry with the air compressor.
Finally, a relaxing dry in the sun.
Much better.

Time to transplant Centipede's innards from the workbench to the cabinet.
Fresh power cord installed.
Power block, power switch, interlock switches, and sound board mounted. One half of the wiring routed and screwed into place.

Time to laminate Centipede.
Apply glue, place pipes, lay laminate on pipes.
Begin removing pipes, j-rolling laminate down into place.
Trim with router.
Looks awesome. Really pleased with how this came out. Perfectly flat and glossy, ready for side graphics.

I decided I needed to do a better job on Centipede's power block.
I dismantled the whole thing, stripped the corrosion and zinc plating off, cleaned, painted, and rebuilt.

Ah yes, the ever popular trackball/billiards ball swap. I’ve seen 8 balls in Centipedes before, but not a 9 ball.
This cabinet features royal blue control panel, pink marquee, blue center mushroom on the glass, and pink outlines centipede on the side.

The glass was also filthy, and paint is beginning to flake off of the back. The previous owner of this machine had put electrician's tape down both sides.
The pricing information was an actual paper card, still held in place by the original tape. I left it as such.

Free idea:
Any higher education institution offering UI/UX degrees should make it part of the curriculum that students must design and ship (put in an actual physical location, used by real people,) one arcade game, and one slot machine that would pass certification.

For Deserted:Domination we built a lighting config that attempted to compensate for lumen/non-lumen/platform specific features by way of post process volumes.
You can check it out in the Deserted:Domination sample.
Later, this was built into the Environment Light Rig Device.

Laminate for Centipede arrived.
First it needs to flatten out a bit.
Before I stick it to the cabinet, I need practice applying and trimming this stuff.
Enter: the sacrificial iCade. $7 at the thrift store!

Working on Centipede's monitor. Underside of the chassis was a bit crusty.
Finally managed to get the old flyback off. Look at that crack. Must have made one heck of a loud pop when it blew.
New flyback installed.
New horizontal deflector transistor installed.

CURRENT STATUS:
On a plane, sitting one row in front of some utter madman that ordered MILK as his in-flight beverage.
The flight attendant had to ask three times if he had heard the passenger correctly.

The control panel hinge was in bad shape. Dented, pitted with rust, and caked with ancient beer and soda.
Stripped the paint, removed the rust, gave it a textured finished, and it is back on the cabinet.

Not much to putting Centipede's control panel back on, really.
Line it up, put the bolts in, and then affix the hasps to the cabinet so they can clamp the panel into place.
A strip of foam insulation makes for a bit of padding when the panel meets the glass.

Centipede's PCB rails were originally stapled to the inner wall of the cabinet.
I opted to drill a few holes and screw them in.
2nd half of the wiring harness routed, PCB slid into place and plugged in.

Centipede's marquee is in decent shape, considering its age. Just needs a wipe down and a scrape with a flat razor to clean off the glue from some ancient tax stamp.
Something must have hit the lower bracket pretty hard back in the day.
