This architectural downgrade was a choice. Someone chose to make the building to the left look worse.

They claim this is "of its time" and must be ever thus. We are forever living trapped inside the dream of a German internationalist-infrared cult in 1922.

There are two types of buildings: Beautiful buildings & Ugly buildings that need a lecture in architectural history to convince you they’re beautiful

A data centre planned in Le Plessis-Robinson. Data centres are unavoidably windowless boxes, but it turns out that a great deal can still be done to humanise them. Thousands of these are coming all over the west, so it is an important precedent. Thank you to @renaissanceurb!

Mocking the idea of beauty is sickening and it’s exactly why nobody wants anything new built near them. Brushing beauty aside as “subjective” is deeply irresponsible and the cause of many of our societal problems.

When beauty is perceived to be problematic, nothing beautiful will be created. It's no secret why contemporary architecture often fails to capture the affection or even interest of most people!

Robert A.M. Stern was a genius who brought classic architectural beauty back to great American cities. His buildings will stand for centuries after he’s gone. May he rest in peace.

Stylistic coherence plus a very slight setback has made the additional storey here highly unobtrusive. An easy way to reduce the controversy generated by additional density.

Lots of visual preference surveys on architectural taste have been run in anglophone countries, but now we have one from the Netherlands, run by @_Aesthetic_City. Interesting results, suggesting that Anglo-American architectural tastes are not distinctive. Left: 8% Right: 92%

Progressives have been on a one hundred year long quest to suppress traditional architecture, to ridicule its defenders, to make the practice of it impractical and illegal. Academia has been captured and fundamentally altered for ever to cater to modernist ideology. All schools

Yet again, the public have such clear preferences for buildings with proportion, enclosure, variety, material richness and human scale rhythm. These principles are not “classical styles”, they are courtesy to the street, to those who pass by & to our common home & civic life….

🧵 CAMBRIDGE: New data. Clear preferences. The public want buildings that fit in, not stick out. A new poll by @DeltapollUK for @createstreets finds 71% of Britons prefer a traditional alternative to the current design for the Christ’s College library. Here’s why it matters ⬇️

As Dresden shows, it is possible & increasingly normal to put back what was lost, to recreate cities of walkability & beauty & to celebrate the local over the loveless. Thanks to popular demand …
