Raage Ugaas is an expert in Somali poetry. He is the person who established the rules and structure of Somali verse. His poetry is extremely sophisticated. He is also the one who taught Somalis to begin a gabay with the phrase β€œHooyaalayeey Hooyee.”

The Somali Osmanya script is generally composed of 41 letters and the hamza (glottal stop). Two of these letters (Y and W) sometimes function as vowels and sometimes as consonants, totaling twenty vowels and 21 consonants. Ten of the vowels are umlauts (or modified vowels).
