Yes, a good number of my wife's work colleagues got tired of corporate life and went to live upcountry or returned to their home provinces. And I think it's becoming more common amongst Thais as they realize working at a job that practically owns you is not what life's about.

As Tun says - you need a town or city that gets visited by Thai tourists. Somewhere like Nan or Uthai Thani or Nakhon Sawan. You'll get a better choice of restarants, cafes, shops and markets open up to serve them, and more importantly, the town will generally be better taken.
