Given various reasons why people drive while hungry, such as food insecurity, religious practice, and lifestyle choices, policymakers should evaluate optimal policies to keep those drivers - and everyone else - safe. [10/11]

Let me contextualize hunger to two conditions we already know cause accidents and are regulated for commercial drivers: alcohol and lack of sleep. Fasting increases accident probability by far less than mild amounts of alcohol but more than mild sleep deprivation. [9/11]

Fasting causes hunger, but also dehydration and mild sleep deprivation. I perform a rich set of analyses that indicate hunger as the main channel behind fasting’s effect. [8/11]

Ramadan’s effect on accidents is higher in more religious provinces and is lower in more secular provinces. Religiousness is proxied by higher AKP vote share and mosques per capita. Secularism is proxied by higher CHP vote share and ratio of alcohol-related accidents [7/11]

Traffic accidents during the rush hour increase on average by 21% during the day of Qadr, a religiously important day that arguably features the most fasting in the Turkish population. [6/11]

Why? Because the same people leave work at the same time during and outside of Ramadan, with the only change being that some are fasting. In fact, Ramadan lowers traffic density throughout the day but does not affect it during the rush hour (3–6 pm) on working days. [5/11]

To answer this question, I study the impact of Ramadan fasting on traffic accidents in Turkey during the rush hour. Turkey does not adjust working hours during the month of Ramadan, which turns the rush hour into a quasi-experiment. [4/11]

There are many reasons why people drive while hungry, including food insecurity, religious practice, and lifestyle choices. But how dangerous is it? [3/11]

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among 5-30 year olds globally. I show that the probability of causing an accident increases while hungry. [2/11]

@blsintlservices I emailed the embassy multiple times to ask for an expedite process, but I received no response. There must be an emergency visa approval process that I believe I should be eligible to. This is the only way that I can attend the conference on time and give my talk.

@blsintlservices The embassy’s website states that it takes around 15 business days to review an application. The conference begins on 28th of August, I have only 9 business days in between my appointment and my plane ticket. I asked BLS to give me an earlier appointment but they refused.

My first application got rejected from @blsintlservices in Ankara/Turkey due to me not being a Turkish resident. I contacted the Spanish embassy in Turkey and was granted the right to apply. However, the earliest appointment I could find was on Aug 14th
