The answer to Apple's overreach is (and has always been): the web. Build for the web, using web technologies. Avoid lock-ins or API. Focus on protocols. Sometimes it's harder, more complicated: that's the price of freedom.

It's pretty nauseating that this endeavor ultimately failed, and the ultimate cost for enabling this intended purpose for the web ended up being having to get inside a global scale behavior modification skinner box.
