Being positive and optimistic was not viewed as particularly important. Perhaps this reflects a desire for their clinician to recognise the impact of their symptoms and for them to be realistic rather than provide false hope.

Most important to participants was having a psychiatrist who is able to explain things clearly. Unsurprisingly knowledge, dedication and friendliness were also up there.

Among those with a preference, middle-aged psychiatrists with more years experience were favoured. No clear patterns emerged with regards to gender (i.e. women did not prefer women).
