Turned in revisions for my book on worship with @ivpress. The latest title is, "Why We Worship." Just under 60k words, it's 10 chapters and covers everything from 20th C. liturgical developments, the different elements of a worship service and their significance, and how

You can always find Bible teachers who will confirm your bias. This is especially true since the dawn of podcasting and social media. We have to be careful not to shape the Bible’s teaching around what we want, but rather to let its truth mold us (even when uncomfortable).

It is good to prioritize a time and place of prayer each day. Don’t let the busyness of life keep you from communion with God.

If you’re interested, I made a video summarizing the document recently approved by the Pope, Mater Populi Fidelis. I overview its teaching and give some Protestant perspective.
“I'm a Reformed minister, and the Reformed have always said that you can't distinguish so strongly between a mediator of intercession (what Roman Catholics say Mary is) and a mediator of redemption. In Scripture, Christ is the one mediator between God and man.” @AdrielTweets

Envy is a powerful motivator, but whatever is built out of envy won’t last. “Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.” (Ecc. 4:4) As Christians we work hard not to surpass our neighbor,

Some thoughts on parenting and the wisdom literature of the Bible.
What happens when you “train up a child in the way,” and they still depart from the faith? @AdrielTweets discusses the tension in Proverbs 22:6 and the rest of the wisdom literature.

In college, I interned at a church pastored by a man who hosted a weekly community group in his home. It wasn’t a traditional Bible study. Each week, he shared what he called “A Beauty of Jesus”—a short, scriptural meditation on some aspect of Christ’s person and work. What

The frequent handling of holy things is dangerous if rather than receiving them with thanksgiving, we allow familiarity to breed contempt.

One key aspect of training up our children in the way they should go is bringing them to God’s throne of grace in worship.
“Moses said, ‘God wants the whole family to gather for worship,’ and Pharaoh says, ‘you can't take your kids.’” @AdrielTweets on the importance of raising your kids in the church.

Whenever our sins press us - whenever Satan would drive us to despair - we ought to hold out this shield, that God is unwilling that we should be overwhelmed with everlasting destruction, because he has appointed his Son to be the salvation of the world. Calvin

Reading Mater Populi Fidelis this morning. Makes me appreciate Ratzinger more. Here's a great section re the use of the title "Co-redemptrix": "While we are able to extend its effects in the world (cf. Col 1:24), neither the Church nor Mary can replace or perfect the redemptive

What profit is a man’s sobriety and decency of conduct, if he is a slave of vain-glory? The slave of vain-glory is no less a sinner than a fornicator; nay, sins even oftener, and more grievously. Chrysostom

The most important application in the sermon is always the application of Christ to the heart of a sinner. This doesn't mean we should avoid other kinds of applications, but the sermon as a distinct act within the liturgy isn't about marching orders for life per se. It is The

This is an important truth. We can’t react to “winsomeness” in a way that causes us to lose the apostolic strategy of cultural engagement that Paul described in places like 1 Corinthians, and which is modeled throughout Acts.
Contextualization is love. It asks, How can I best explain the truth in a way that will persuade this person? What do they believe or want that I can build on to convince? What obstacles do I need to address before *this* person will believe? Over-contextualization fails to love

“Nor should anyone think that this love of God—and the giving of the Son that proceeds from it—does not pertain to him, since in general it is destined for all. For there is no mortal human being who is not a part of this world, apportioned by God: therefore, there is no one who
There's some discussion about whether "so" in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world" refers to extent or manner. Are we being told: This is how much God loves the world, or this is how God loves the world (i.e. by sending Jesus). I like Chrysostom and Calvin's comments on the
