Whether you’re a fan of Hallowe’en or not, you have to give it credit for being the last line of defence against Christmas advancing even earlier into the year, a ragtag gang of goths holding the line against a battalion of baubled barbarians

@AdamCSharp Bonfire Night seems to have spluttered out like a damp squib - when I were a lass it was a huge deal and nary a thought of Xmas til that had been and gone

@nbrink77 Here in the UK we have Bonfire Night but it has never been commercial enough to mount a serious defence against the creep of Christmas

@AdamCSharp @almurray Not sure if you're a football fan or not, but I can help but read this in the voice of Peter Drury. I can't help but imagine Halloween and Christmas lining up before a massive Super Sunday clash.

@Tommy__A @almurray You've now got me thinking about who would play for each side. An all-time greats Christmas team would of course have to have these... Steve Spruce Danny Myrrh-phy Bobby Moore-Turkey-Anyone? Harry Candy Kane Elf-Inge Haaland

@AdamCSharp Thanksgiving never stood a chance. Santa's presence at the Macy's parade made it merely Pre-Christmas long ago.

@AdamCSharp No! I like all the Christmas regalia. And since we didn't decorate last year because our new windows were installed in December, I'm putting it all up in early November this year!

@AdamCSharp yeah, well, that used to be thanksgiving in the states, and it fell years ago. we halloweenists may be stronger than thanksgivingists, but i expect the jolly steamroller to defeat us eventually

@AdamCSharp Ah .. Whitby Goth weekend !! I had the surreal experience of taking a local stopping train, not realising that the event was scheduled that weekend. 90% of the passengers were in black silk, black leather, bodices and frock coats .. even the dogs wore piercings. @ckweth

@AdamCSharp My local garden centre is full of sparkly/tinseled dinosaurs, which is a weird new development in Christmas onslaught ...

@AdamCSharp In Greece Halloween is still growing slowly so even if we have spiders and eye candies, melomakarona (Byzantine fasting dessert that still satnds strong today) are prevailing

@AdamCSharp All kinds of weird this year though. Halloween tinsel??? Halloween and Christmas seem to have been spliced.

@AdamCSharp I don't like Halloween but I actively thank my Halloween-obsessed mother for holding the line.

@AdamCSharp All I remember is hours of careful consideration & painstaking crafting of the perfect costume only to be confronted with the reality of late October Illinois weather. Had to cover it all up under a down coat. Only solace was Charlie Brown special & popcorn balls.

@AdamCSharp Unfortunately in Belgium the spooky trenches have failed. Xmas chocolates share shelf space with spiders and pumpkin skulls. Since the end of September.

@AdamCSharp My Sainsburys has been selling mince pies since September though - I think Halloween is getting swallowed up - it's more of an island that til recently was connected to land, holding out against rising seas.

@AdamCSharp Weirdly the season aisle of Tesco this year was stuffed with Christmas stuff at the very end of August and the Hallowe'en stuff didn't show up until October!

@AdamCSharp Lowes has had their Christmas stuff out since mid September. We are losing the war.

@AdamCSharp Remembrance Day (Veteran's day in the US) in Canada is a notable enough holiday that it's a pretty good first line of defense as well. A solid ten day buffer bought thanks to the sacrifices of our troops. Those 10 days will never be forgotten.

@AdamCSharp In Australia Christmas has been rolling through the grocery stores and malls like a rapid fungus since August but they’re too cowardly to accept Halloween.
