In other critical sectors (aviation, nuclear, medicines), effective regulatory oversight requires resourcing in the tens of millions annually. The European AI Office needs similar scale to fulfil its core mandate of protecting EU citizens.

'If 2023 was the year when AI took centre stage and hit the news and the policy agenda, then 2024 is the year when – to borrow a phrase – the rubber hit the road.'. Read Ada Director @la_gaia’s reflections from the last year and a look ahead to 2025.

More time is also needed to develop evidence about the effectiveness of participatory and inclusive mechanisms, and whether they would deliver value if adopted and integrated systematically into data infrastructure and decision-making.

Produced as part of a programme with @CivicDataCoop & @digitalgoodnet, the research finds that more investment is needed to bridge from theoretical work on mechanisms and community initiatives into practice at different scales, from smaller pilots to larger-scale mechanisms.

AI systems don’t work as one-size-fits-all technologies. Mainstream large language models marginalise linguistic communities and amplify injustices against minoritised groups. Read @HannahMClaus' new blog post on the challenges for minoritised LLMs.ā¬‡ļø.
