For anyone that missed it ... we've launched our latest research on #mobility and #sociability - a collaborative piece of research with @BeeNetwork and residents of #Leigh in Greater Manchester
Weāre launching our report entitled āGetting around Leigh: Social research with older and Disabled peopleā where we considered the mobility and sociability needs of residents in Leigh, a town in Greater Manchester. This is a collaborative piece of research with @BeeNetwork

Through this research we have explored a link between mobility and sociability. We hope this informs future work in the active travel space and enables older and disabled people to access their communities using active travel.

Sociability, and the presence of social infrastructure, is equally as important as walkability. Without places to go, older and disabled people feel disconnected from their communities. Unable to spend time in their localities they feel isolated and unable to lead active lives.

The desire to āget out of the houseā and spend time in their communities depends on mobility and yet there are numerous barriers to mobility. Anti-social behaviour, poor walking surfaces, long distances, and a lack of comfort can lead people to avoid walking and wheeling.

We interviewed expert stakeholders, ran mapping workshops with residents in Leigh library, and conducted walking and wheeling interviews with older and disabled residents to understand their needs. This exploratory, qualitative piece of research looks in depth at these issues.

In our previous research into active neighbourhoods in Greater Manchester, we found that older and disabled people felt that active neighbourhoods often didnāt reflect their needs in order to live healthy active lives. This led us to developing the current piece of research.
