It is critical to fully comprehend what is being communicated. In Australia π¦πΊ, many indigenous people languish in jail purely because the legal system couldn't care less about interpreting for them in court. Language is a matter of justice. #MadlangaCommission

This recognises the critical role interpreters play in the courts of justice. We saw even the former Speaker of Parliament Nosiviwe Nqakula using an interpreter in court. This is because legal language can be complex. #MadlangaCommission

BREAKING NEWS: Court Interpreters are taking center stage in SAπΏπ¦. Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has launched court robes for court interpreters across the country. This is groundbreaking as South Africa becomes the first country to have robes for court interpreters.

Multilingualism has always been the way of African civilizations. This is not about promoting monolingualism but multilingualism and pluralinguism. The average African speaks no less than 3 languages.

Indigenous languages are slowly regaining their place of importance and value. Every time a language dies, proverbs, knowledge, culture, history, and philosophies die with it. It is not simply about a language but the history and perspective of a group of people.

We see you too @SizweMpofuWalsh. It's a pity that all political platforms are in English with no indigenous language subtitles including tv. Perhaps this is why Ukhozi Fm and UMhlobobowenene remain the most popular radio stations year on year.
We appreciate the South African Sign Language Interpretersπ€@SizweMpofuWalsh @_SMWX #MadlangaCommission We see you! π€π½π€π½

N'waJika is a successful Xitsonga perfomance poet. She is booked throughout the festive season. She was an unemployed engineer before she picked up her pen. Last year we had a conversation with her with other artists. Visit our YouTube channel to listen to her story.
Hlayisani Shiburi /N'waJika The Poet reads for us. This is absolutely beautiful. We want you to read in your indigenous language. Tag us.

@StrathCIPIT will be hosting a webinar exploring how licensing frameworks can protect African datasets, ensure fair participation in global AI development, and balance innovation with legal safeguards.. ππ½ https://t.co/MNKyOtNur5
@ActionLanguages The best people to weigh in on this would be Prof @chythepenguide and Dr @MelissaOmino I'm not sure if this also clearly resolves the issue of fair use and fair dealing with respect to AI training data (in the US) given that it is a settlement.

Afrikaans en Xhosa saam
We're at the #Woordfees in Stellenbosch. It's a discussion in 100% Xhosa and 100% Afrikaans. One speaker said they speak English at home. He learnt Afrikaans in the streets through using subtitles while watching 7DeLaan. What other languages have you learnt on TV? @Official_SABC1
